Hey, I brought a motorcycle GPS but I'm not exactly sure how to hook it up, I can hook it up straight to the battery which would get the job done but I would rather hook it up to something that won't drain the battery if I leave the GPS on the bike - so I was thinking of having it wire to something like the headlights where it only gets power when the ignition is switch on.
I was hoping to be able to do it myself rather then having to pay someone $100aud to get it done - got quote from two places.
I have a 2007 Suzuki GS500F.

Suggest you use an inline fuse, and find a convenient orange wire.

recommendations from when I was hooking up my heated grips were to wire it into the low beam of my headlight. I ended up just hooking it up to the license plate light wires. Good luck with it. I've never given gps a second though, but lately I've been thinking about trying to pick one up next year. It would be nice for planning for nice 4 hour rides to WV, instead of doing it on paper and getting lost 15 times.
Does it say on the bike any where what model my bike is?

On all models any plain orange wire is switched with the ignition and suitable for what you want. If you use the low beam wire your GPS obviously won't get power if you use high beam.
On my Honda, I made a dedicated red and black wire, (comes from radio shack, wire is paired red and black). I attached directly to the battery, with an INLINE FUSE as near the battery as possible. Then ran the wire along the frame under the tank up to the handle bar.
With this set up, the GPS wire is always "hot".........MY GPS will shut itself down when external power is lost, and then it goes into charge mode............this will charge the GPS internal battery for portable use. There is very tiny drain on the motorcycle battery during charge mode...........
Or I just remove the GPS altogether and use in car when not on bike........
$100 just to install !!!! WTF.........I only paid $100 fopr my Nuvi ...
