Title: Big mods over the winter, no pics yet, but would like help!
Post by: ZukiGS500E on November 08, 2010, 12:19:07 PM
i currently have a set of gsxr wheels front and rear. i am bidding on a swingarm on ebay, and hope to win it in 2 days, also when i get paid on friday, im buying front forks and triple tree to swap on my 92 gs500 any tips or tricks, to make this a successful build? i also dont know how to insert pics, so i wanna show everyone what im going to attempt, i also dont know exactly what i am going to do for gauges, can i use a gsxr gauge cluster, how would i go about doing this?

Definitely sounds like a good project. there's been a lot of wheel and fork swapping going on here lately. I can only remember one swingarm swap on czoko's(?) bike, and he actually cut and rewelded the frame wider so it would fit. dig around and check out a couple projects, fork swaps are definitely doable and look great, you just need to press a gs steering stem into the gsxr triple clamp and make a spacer. you would probably do best just to pick up an aftermarket set of gauges, unless youre super good at electrical work to be able to wire up the new gauges without instructions. I'm looking forward to watching over winter, but hope that youre just doing this for the fun/learning experience because you'll definitely end up spending enough to have just bought a gsxr as a second bike by the time youre done!

well im hoping not to spend too much, the forks with front and rear brakes are costing me 100$ and the swing arm with shock brake bracket master cylinder will be 50 plus 16 dollars shipping, so im hoping not to spend too much cause i want to buy a gsxr, i might try to save up money for one though, there are nice bikes cheap on craigslist, but i would like to keep this bike, cause its my first and it a decent bike and easy to ride

All that for $100? Not bad at all. What bike is that from?

Yeah not bad at all! are they the newer upside down forks? One person on here, I won't name names, threw about $3000 into his bike between doing a front end swap, new tail, and various other things. It adds up quick if you're not careful!

What experience do you have/people around you that are willing to help have regarding fabrication? None of this stuff will just bolt on.

haha, I think he was the one.

As far as the front end swaps, you'll need a spare GS bottom triple, or be willing to sacrifice yours, have the stem pressed out, and pressed into the gsxr bottom clamp, then after you make the spacer you're pretty much done with the hard work. Once you get the gsxr triple clamps on the GS frame you're just going to need the rest of the gsxr front end for it. You'll need the brakes, wheel, axle, fender, brake lever/cylinder, and handlebars. You'll need to come up with a bracket to mount the headlight and gauges. It's a pretty doable project if you have the kind of brain that lets you work through things without laid out instructions.

The swingarm would be tougher. You'd want to make sure there's enough surface up front to be able to grind/cut it skinny enough to fit into the GS frame, and that the hole would line up for the rear shock to fit in there. You'll probably need the shock linkage from the gsxr swingarm unless you can get the GS linkage to work. Then you'll need to see if you can get the chainline sorted. The sprocket on the new wheel is going to be out further than the one on the GS, so you might have to find a way to move the front sprocket out, but I'm not sure how far it can move out before the frame gets in the way. It might be close enough that you can work it out with the front sprocket though. I think I've seen people do 160-170mm tire swaps without the chain hitting the tire. You'll need the gsxr rear brake on there, and I don't know enough about brakes to know if you can just hook the gsxr brake up to the gs cylinder. It's just a back brake so I'd think it's worth a shot, but that's not a professional opinion.

Is this your first bike? You might do better with some more straight forward mods, like replacing the stock fork springs with progressive springs, or swapping to a katana front end. The katana fork tubes are the same diameter so you can just slide the new front end right into the GS triple clamps. You can replace your rear shock with a katana 750 rear shock or an 06-07 R6s shock. Some better handlebars, better sprockets, exhaust, all that kind of stuff will make your bike more personal without seriously tearing into a bike you might not even be keeping forever, you know?

its already in pieces, stems are being pressed out, but they are at a friends house where there is a press, and he is going to do it, but i dont know exactly when, its just a frame and motor right now, got swing arm in mail the other day, and have forks
