Title: pilot screws
Post by: cornerman7 on November 08, 2010, 08:39:59 PM
I just bought an '02 GS500E and have heard that the pilot screws are set by the factory and run on the lean side to satisfy emissions regulations. i also heard that you can drilll out the caps to GET to the pilot screws. Anyone out there familiar with the procedure and once the screws have been accessed, how many turns out the screws should go (with stock jetting and airbox)? :dunno_black:

No Worries I would address this to Buddha he is the Carb master. Search his name he has probably covered this a million times. Good Luck! :thumb:

There's a matrix on the wiki of what people have tried.  In general, it looks to be about 3 turns out.

Take off the carbs and invert it, there is a pic somewhere but its a brass cap wiht a tiny hole in the middle of it. Shallow drill it preferably with a left twist drill bit and it will expose the air screw. 3 ... yes a good start, but how does the bike run now ... how are the plugs ... if its close to tan/brown leave it be till you ahve to get to it for some other reason.
Of course if you have long warmup times, or other issues that get worse wiht cold and humidity, you prolly get it set to 3 or re jet it etc.
Cool.
Buddha.

Thanx guys - good info. Don't know HOW it's running yet. It idles but doesn't actually motor-vate. It'd been sitting for a while so I have to de-gunk the carburetor first. Then register it I guess. Yeehaaa.
