Title: How do I remove the ignition barrel?
Post by: wizurd on November 25, 2010, 12:39:37 PM
Hi all

Hoping someone on here can help me. Basically the gs500 1999 bike that I'm doing up has no keys. So I've taken the top yoke off which has the ignition barrel attached. Looking at the back of the barrel it's obviously encased but there are no bolts to release it. Just what look like little metal pins with cones around them. Bad description so I'll add pics later. How do I get the encased barrel out so I can take it to a locksmith to get some keys cut? I'm guessing it's a security measure. Have tried drilling but the case is softer than the pins. Tried a hammer and screw driver to break the pins but no joy.

Any suggestions welcomes cause I'm proper stuck

Thanks

Ok heres a pic of the back of the yoke.

I've circled some of the pins. The red one are the ones i think i need to remove since they will allow access to the back of the ignition casing where the ignition cable enters.

The blue ones are circled but i think they hold the actual casing to the yoke and its not that that i need but the actual ignition barrel itself.

I lost my only key, (luckily outside a locksmith!) and he used the seat lock to cut a new key because it was easier to pick. Might be less hassle to take the seat lock to a locksmith than try to remove the ignition barrel. The guy said the seat lock has fewer tumblers than the ignition and he wasn't 100% sure it would work, but it turned out fine.

6mm socket 3 inch extension and a hammer.  they are security bolts that the head brakes off after they are installed.  but i have removed them with this process before.

TAKE THE TOP TRIPPLE WITH THE LOCK TO THE LOCKSMITH
they will impression a key to the lock
if not, they will open up the lock and make a key....

Hi

Thanks for the advice all. I'm gonna drop down the locksmith today at lunch and just hand the whole thing in. Hopefully he will be able to get the thing out. If not I'll try that socket idea with a hammer. Fingers crossed

Thanks

Sorted :-)

Took it down the local locksmiths. They managed to turn the one pin into a screw by putting a slot in the middle of it.

Wierdly the pin they took out was one of the blue labelled ones. They must have then rotated the entire lock and casing around then somehow slide out the lock.

Either way i've got two keys for £19.50 and they put everything back together.

Thanks for the advice all
