Title: Is anything wrong with the layout in this picture?
Post by: thecdn on December 09, 2010, 03:38:45 PM
I just took off the clutch cover, magneto cover, and oil pan to replace the gaskets on an 05 GS500F. I put everything back together and the bike won't start. The starter goes good but it doesn't turn over at all. The only thing I can think of that might not have gone back on right is this section. I stupidly didn't take a picture of it before I took it off. Does anything look wrong with this setup?

Thanks for any thoughts/ideas.

i have a 97 so our ign. rotors are differant, but i thinkg you should have 2 pick-ups. not one. not sure how it would work otherwise, but ive never looked at a 01+

Just looked at my 05, and it looks just like that. I can't tell in your photo, but is there a black / blue wire behind the brown one? It should connect to the the top solder, just left of the brown one.

Did you remove the rotor and reinstall it in a different position?

Will check when I get home from work.

I removed it but I don't know if it's in a different position from the original. That's why I'm asking you guys if it looks correct or not.  :)

did you move your bike or your wheels, while it was off? The rotor is supposed to be in a specific orientation when your number one cylinder TDC. I'll check the book and see what I find.

TDC?

TDC = Top Dead Centre when the number one piston is at the top of the chamber

So you took off the rotor, then moved the bike around. Then reinstalled the rotor, not knowing what position its supposed to be in?  I'll be back tomorrow, I'll have time to check the book tomorrow, but try to find any info on it in the mean time.

PROBLEM SOLVED

The dummy who put the bike back together, me, didn't realize there was a groove on the bottom of the rotor that had to match up with the protrusion at the end of the shaft. It was instead just resting on top of the shaft so it didn't move. When I looked at it and then put the rotor on so that things were matched up properly the bike fired up first thing.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and ideas.   :thumb:

Learned a few more things in my journey as an amateur bike mechanic.

Edit to add...

An hour after my son left the house with the newly repaired bike a woman cut him off in a parking lot and he dropped it stopping. A little road rash on him and the bike. The thing is a little tank dealing with external damage.
