Title: Merry Christmas everyone!!!
Post by: madjak30 on December 25, 2010, 12:27:27 AM
Santa came, Santa came, Santa came...ummm...I'm going to bed so that when the kids wake me up in the morning, I'm not too tired...here's hoping it isn't too early...

Merry Christmas...(I hope there is an MT-01 under the tree for me...but the box looks a little small)  :icon_twisted:

Later.

Yeah, it was a good bonding day...could have been a better reason, but it was a nice quiet day together.

Madjak: sounds like a blessing in disguise!

Yama:  glad you're still around and kicking!

As for me....
My dad is taking me to vegas at the end of the month as a Christmas present
This is my gift to myself:

It's a 1957 acrylic and charcoal abstract by Hugh Mesibov (My favorite artist)  it's either part of the monhegan or the spontaneous/exploding landscape series.  It falls right in between datewise.
He's a lesser known, but incredibly talented and important American artist.  Gallery value on this piece would be around $20,000.  I paid a very small fraction of that.  :icon_mrgreen:

My mom got me a couple of Robert Graham shirts.

That is exactly why I don't get art. I honestly thought that was a drop cloth from painting your bike.

to each his own.

I used to be the same way, but, as some of you may have noticed, in the last few years I've developed a taste for the finer things in life.
This is the other piece I have by Hugh Mesibov.  It is a 1978 etching-aquatint with only one print made entitled 'Instant Dream'

that last one almost looks like my mothers remington sculpture. anyway i can get high res shots of those, this mini 'puter needs some new desktop art. im liking them, very nice

See that one I can see as "art" it represents something to my left brain.

Yama with this netbook that is the one thing I'm kind disappointed with. Window's 7 starter does not let you set a desktop. I was going to upgrade but I'm not spending $100 pretty much just for that!

BTW my favorite work of art is Starry Night by Van Gogh.

I don't really like impressionism, it reminds me of the old crappy printers that pixelated everything.

Surrealism is, by far, my favorite genre, but that abstraction by Mesibov represents a unique and short-lived period of his artistic career consisting of ~12-13 paintings.  Most of his work is surrealist.  He did a Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner series that is truly breathtaking and worthy of the tale.

This is another piece of art that captured my gaze

It's an 1863 pencil sketch.  The text reads '1863    The Capitol of South Carolina   Death to Abolition'
Myself and a handful of semi amateur (several have PhD's in history) historians believe we've narrowed the list of potential artists down to fewer than half a dozen names.

I've also got an entirely ink Nicholas Drake drawing.
He was also a surrealist.  I don't have a photo of mine, but here's a link to some of his work that's available.

Sadly, he passed a few years ago.

That is just awesome Yama!  Most of Picasso's stuff is a little 'light' for my taste (A good bit of Dali's is as well, but he does have his share of darker work) But having an original piece by Picasso is just awesome.  Drake shows a lot of Picasso influence in his works, though he does tend towards a slightly more cluttered feel.  The piece I have has an uncharacteristic darkness as well.

I'd love to see pics of that sketch yama.

Love that abstract spc.

It's funny what one person loves another hates. I purchased this at a yard sale for $2. Was in a crappy old frame. Got it re-framed and it hangs in my living room. Do not know who painted it as the writing on the back of the painting had faded to almost invisible and it is initialled J.F on the painting itself. But an old lady from down the road could have painted it for all I care. I love it.

(http://imagecache5.art.com/p/LRG/8/853/1KSY000Z/pablo-picasso-the-camel.jpg)  not much of a working camera, but is quite similar to this one. it had always resembled a camel to me. the canvas is from early 20th century. , other than that provenance is had to establish :technical: was always told is real. but even if not, still cool in an odd way. and way sentimental :)

What size is it?
Provenance is basically meaningless for an original as anyone would want one of the few dozen Picasso 'experts' to authenticate it regardless of paperwork.
I would estimate that even on a low end, assuming semi-poor condition and napkin sized, it'd be worth in the 20-30k range once authenticated.
