Title: What "Sound" Do You Prefer on Bike Videos
Post by: mister on January 02, 2011, 05:42:39 AM
Those who have watched my videos will remember that I have a mix of the bike/engine noise somewhat masked with music. So as you listen to the music you hear the bike in the background, while watching the footage.

I've just pieced together another video of a ride I did today with some liter bikes. Actually, the bikes on the ride beside the GS500 were -
Suzuki Bking
Suzuki Hayabusa
Suzuki GSXR1000
Kawasaki ZX10R
Kawasaki ZX9R
Kawasaki Z1000
BMW S1000RR
Honda VFR800

Anyway. I'm thinking of leaving this one with its raw sound as the GS engine sits near 8,000rpm on the run through the twisties. However, I've had comments in favor of music and in favor of non music just raw sound. I feel with the music added to the engine noise the video doesn't seem as long when watched, as compared to a raw sound video of the same length. But thought I'd poll for this video and ask for any comments you might have on the topic as well.

The only way I like just music, is if you're just watching a group of guys riding and aren't really going to hear anything other than a bunch of engines all running together. Even then it depends on what the song is. If it's a good song, then that's great. If it's the same MTV metal that you always see in sportbike videos, it kinda drags down the video with it and I end up just turning the sound off on my computer.

I usually do like hearing the ending go, assuming that something is going on where the motor actually means something. If it's a guy doing a lot of acceleration around back roads, or doing wheelies, the noise helps you tell what's going on. If you're just riding down a straight road at the same speed, the noise isn't gonna do much. Also, wind noise affects it. It's only worth it if you can hear engine noise over the wind. I hate watching videos when all you can hear is 'WWWWSSSHSHSSHHHHHHHHH'. Music and engine noise is a good combo, but again if you put nickleback as the soundtrack, I'm gonna wish it was just silence.

Thanks, TT.

I don't use MTV, Current Pop, whatever. I try to fit the mood of the music to the style of the ride without the music being too overbearing. So Nickleback has no place in my stuff.

I am with TT. Depends on what I am watching. If is a vid that the title says " GS500 with new yoshimira exhaust" and they play music on it. That is a big no, no and sure to p1ss everyone off who clicks to watch it. But on the other hand if it is a group ride a mix of music playing and maybe have a quiet bit for a few minutes, maybe at some really twisty buts where the bikes are working and then music for the straighter bits would be ideal in my eyes.

Good video with sound and music....

This noise is bad, you can barely even hear the motor over the wind...

This one was an ok mix of both. Starts out with music and hearing the bike for a burnout, but then goes to just music. The song is borderline, but still has an ok energy to it.

Close, video is ok, hearing the motor is well, but the song kills it...

Wrong wrong wrong wrong....

You've gotta be kidding me...

Good noise, no music, boring video though...

I don't even care if the bike isn't even running, if the soundtrack is AC/DC, I'll still sit through the entire video...

Perfect example of motor noise with no music...

please, no music. as much as I like a well edited ride with a well thought out soundtrack 90% of them suck. I can queue up some music myself.... and if I need the music the action likely sucks anyway.

Motor makes music.  Tough to get it right though.

I know it's a little late since you have done the vids, but I like it when the ride starts without music...just engine, but once at speed the music hits the background...probably equal volume to the engine (unless like tt stated about the wind noise, then total music) until almost the end...music stops while the bike is slowing and coming to a stop...hear the engine idle to the end of the vid...

Just my two cents... :thumb:

Later.

It's never too late for a poll. Cause there are always other vids and other people doing vids.
