My grandfather used to fly in the Lancaster bombers for the RAF in world war 2. He never spoke much of the war.
The only thing he ever said to me about it was when I found out what he actually did in the war.
When I commented "That's real cool grandpa!"
His reply was "There is nothing cool about hosing your best mates out of the inside of a plane."
So I guess the old guy in this film had similar memories. Would have been a very rough time to live in and sometimes makes our "hard times" insignificant in comparison.
Lest we forget.
RIP Grandpa.

Aye. jus listening to the guy was moving
I worked at Fantasy of Flight one summer in highschool. For those that don't know this place is the world's largest private collection of WWII aircraft. I spoke to a great many of soldiers, sailors, and Marines and their stories where just mind blowing. I would have loved to had a camcorder to preseve these stories because each year we are losing more and more of "the greatest generation" and their stories will be lost forever.

Im wanting to write a book, using ( UNEDITED) recollections of soldiers and sell it to benefit vets programs, these guys to me are like WOW i can listen for days on end. just listening to the old folks recall tehir youth is mindblowing
i had taken a ride on a b17 in teh tailgunner slot for my great uncle and shot a video last year for him. he died not 3 weeks later. i had wantedhim to go on it. but he didnt make it that was a kickass ride tho for me. was in a plane called aluminum overcast
when it came to knoxville tn
You had to have balls of steel to be a tail gunner. Not only was it the coldest part of the plane if anyone was gonna get shot first it was the tail gunner.
I used to do a lot of maintenance work and one time while working in a retirement village I had to repaint a bedroom for an elderly German guy. He was the same age as my grandfather so I asked if he was in the war. He reluctantly admitted he was. He was an officer on a German U-boat that used to patrol the North Sea. He had some sad and very interesting tales. Thing like how the fear of the English depth charges used to send crew members mad. He even pulled out a few photos he managed to keep at POW camps after he had to surrender. It was great to hear stories from the other side. He too, like my grandfather told me that war is such a waste of life.
My great grandfather hans rudolf pufahl was an intersting cat. born in 1892, was an english shipping captain, had a home in what is now east berlin, ( street with family name on it) then during ww2, was an amateur photographer. ive got pictures from the nazi POV. showing the ss, in formation, many of their crazy demented leader, he got the merit cross for that. ( which i have in my posession). anyhoo the man knew his shipping and all things war/military. he too did NOT care for war. was approached by someone over there with an offer, of an officers commission, he declined it, saying " i dont see good things happening for this country" and left immediately thereafter. ( home is still in familys name) but he tells nazis to in essence f%$k off. so he comes toUS. later on became mayor in coral springs FL. people like this is why i want to write this book, ( plus i have ALOT of time on my hands) problem is many dont want to talk about it. id be happy with a recollection of a day at base or somethign, but am not going to force anyone to talk about anythign they wish not to. other problem is, locating these people
