Here's a site with lots of history, but no mention of the 500D

Sorry for the double post..
the original pic posted looks a lot more like the gs400d.. maybe they converted it to a 500cc for police use?
That is the 4 cylinder GS500. Short run, just 3 years according to http://www.suzukicycles.org/All-Suzuki/all_suzuki_models.html
But it says the 1989-present motor has a 270° crank. Is that right? I thought it was 180°
That is one pretty cool looking bike, i wouldn't mind one myself
Oh man that is slick. I like the exhaust! Wonder if maybe it is an asian model?

What Paulcet said. GS500E with four-cylinder, twin-cam about 480cc, in-line, across the frame motor. Short lived model. Very similar to the earlier GS550 motor. Don't know why Suzuki reduced the capacity. The GS500 was a bit of an oddity in that customers tended to either go for the GS400 or the GS550 and sorta ingored the middle one. See German site:
http://www.gs-classic.de/
for some other info on the GS500E.
Suzuki sold its Police (Patroller) models heavily into Asian markets. In Sri Lanka, the Police until quite recently used "our" GS500 as a duty bike.
There was a GS500 in Europe. It was a GS550 with sleeves in the cylinders to reduce the CC's and HP for insurance and licensing.
I'm obviously in one of 'those' moods.
The first thing I noticed was 'DP'
That is all...
Stands for "Duh Pole-lice"

What about this one? This tank sure looks familiar but ads says for a GSF-400-P. Looks like another model in Europe and not here. Must be smaller engine for licensing and insurance purposes.
I remember reading about the GSX-250-F. Cool bike but never sold in the US.
(PS: I bought a brand new gray rim from them and got it today - from Greece - in 12 days. Only $30 shipping. Faster and cheaper than lots of US sellers! Go figure?

"Our" GS500 as a Police bike....came across a 2001 Suzuki corporate report on GS500EPW (that's what they call 'em in the report) being given to govt for use in Presidential motorcade. Report and crappy little photo at:
