Title: Removing the decals
Post by: stroztech on January 29, 2011, 11:12:15 PM
Hi Folks,

I am considering removing the factory decals from the fairings of my K9 GS500F.
Any tips?

Thanks in advance.

Use a heat gun or hair dryer to warm them up, they will peel off easier. Go behind with a little bit of lacquer thinner on a rag to remove the glue that gets left behind, and then seal it up with a good coat of wax. Take pictures, share results. Done.

What Redhen said... a blow dryer is less extreme than a heat gun. I used a Heat gun for the idiot stickers on my tank... kept at a distance and closely monitoring the heat of the stickers. Peel SLOWLY and GENTLY otherwise the clear coat will be damaged.

For residue removal I used Eucalyptus Oil

Indeed, a blow dryer may be safer. If you use any kind of thinner to get rid of the glue, make sure not to touch any black plastic with it. It will turn it.

Was going to see if Eucalyptus Oil was good. :thumb:

Probably could have done it today without a hairdryer: 42.5C (that's 108.5F)  :D

Seriously tho, Thanks again.
Will post pics when I've got around to it.

Goo Gone worked great for me :thumb: About an hour to do everything no dryers just a 1/4 bottle and the little plastic scraper thinks its less than $4 at Wal-Mart

Thinners is a lil harsh. Turps works fine to get rid of glue residue.
