Title: Which Cap
Post by: ChemDog on February 07, 2011, 06:41:05 PM
Does anyone know if a gas cap off of another bike will fit the GS??  I have a cap off of a katanna that I got for cheap but it doesnt match the bolt holes (unless I am just dumb).  The tank I have is a newer style tank (thanks to TBolt :thumb:)  I thought I had scored a deal with the kat stuff because I got the cap and the seat lock for like 5 bucks.  The seat lock worked just fine so I thought I was good untill I went to install the cap.

You are welcome.

Old and new GS500 tanks take the same gas cap. They use 4 bolts to hold it on. The spacing of the bolts you see on it are for 8 bolts and half of the bolts are there just for looks. Like this one:

On some with a hinged cap, the bottom bolt (a fake bolt) may not be there because the hinge is there. As you can see here:

Anyway, it is considered an 8 bolt cap. There are 5 bolt caps where the spacing is not the same.
Any Suzuki 8 bolt cap should fit.  (May be referred to an "8 or 7 bolt cap" as the one bolt may be missing because of the hinge, as shown above)

PHOTOS of your cap?

adidasguy,

I haven't seen many screw on caps like that for the GS500. Where can I find something like the one in your photo?

This should help.

Some places that have them:

http://www.whaccessories.com/GS500Accessories.htm
http://www.virtualvillage.com/black-gas-tank-cap-for-suzuki-gsxr-motorcycles-gs500-gs600f-gsf1200-004616-215.html?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=shcomp

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/5/93/11954/DPITEM/Street-Bike-Gas-Caps-Vortex-Fuel-Cap.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch

And old message thread about them:

I know there is another place because I bought one with a small flip up lever at the same time. I'll check my files at the office.
Here is one place that has it, though its not where I bought it:

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/5/93/29726/DPITEM/Street-Bike-Gas-Caps-Roaring-Toyz-Quick-Release-Gas-Cap.aspx
Here you select the Suzuki 4 hole not the 3 hole:

Be sure you get a 7/8 bolt one, not a 5 bolt one. Sometimes they don't list GS500's so pick a different model that is an 8/7 bolt cap.
