Title: Ignition issues, 91 gs
Post by: cone_eater on February 14, 2011, 05:31:39 PM
History of problems...
I bought the bike around a year ago. When purchased it didn't like starting. I replaced the battery then still had the issue. It would turn over for ever but never really hit. If I put a jumper box on it bam, it ran like a champ. Had a weak spark unless the box was hooked up.

Shortly after I blew the motor and have since replaced it around 8 months ago. The same spark issue worsened, weak spark and only on one side. I switched coils and the spark still remained on the left side only and was very weak. Tried switching the stator and didn't help any. I got pissed and put it up.

Presently: I would like to fix it now. Done procrastinating.
I am thinking its the CDI unit but have no idea really.

Any opinions?

Thanks, Sam

Bad battery, starter relay, starter (not likely after the swap), or faulty wiring. First guess is the battery though.

But it turns over perfectly??? How would the battery be the issue?

You said hooking a jumper box and it fires right up? Points to a weak battery or faulty wiring to me. Could be too thick motor oil, but that would be a cold motor problem.

What else have you done to diagnose the problem?

I agree that the wiring could be a issue. How could Oil viscosity cause a no fire issue?

I have used a multi meter on the stator wires, changed the stator completely, replaced the spark plug wires, ohmed the coil wires, changed plugs... I can't even remember what else.  :technical:

Did you mean stator earlier? not starter. lol

Geez man, sorry. I confused myself. Trying to help another guy with his lack of spark and got the 2 mixed up. My bad

If the motor is spinning easily but you are failing to get spark, it could be the ground wire going to the motor. But I doubt it. I would guess the ignition control or the coils (or something between the two). Did you literally swap the left and right coils or just the wiring? Just curious.

Shouldn't be the stator since a great battery will run a bike without one. And I was thinking oil viscosity was bogging down the starter motor. So that's a non-issue.

literally swapped them. I changed the ground wire. I just have spark to one side. the left. and no matter what I do it stays there. AND almost as if it double sparking to the same bank... maybe
