I'm pretty sure most tank bags are meant to be taken with you. At least that is what I do with mine. I had one tail bag I used to leave strapped to Flick left it on most of the time so they could see my handicapped placard. That was all that was in it but one day at my apartment someone decided to take the whole thing well not the buckles so they have a useless bag and I had to get another handicapped placard and went with a tank bag. Actually, went with the permanent handicapped plate since the lady at the DMV actually knew you could get one. The last one didn't which is why I used my placard.

If they're going to steal stuff out of an unlocked bag, do you think they'll think twice about cutting open a locked one? Or are they not allowed to carry knives where you are? :D

As Mary said, I don't think tank bags are meant to be left on a bike. They are only held on by magnets and straps (which I never use). Most will come with a little handle on top for you to carry and some can even be put over your shoulder (not the most masculine look) or worn as a back pack.

So, without magnets and or straps how do you keep your tank bag on? The Rapid Transit 19 magnets hold easily past 84 miles an hour. No need for straps. It does get embarrassing at work though when I forget about the metal ledge at the security checkpoint. I will try to walk and drag it off at the same time. Lets just say it takes alot to move those magnets and more than once I've been jerked back by the lack of movement of my bag!

I use the magnets. Just not the straps.

And lol and the check point. I can just imagine it being done  :tongue2:

I think a tail bag would be easier to lock to the bike. I generally run the bungie cords under the seat. If you do it that way, the seat lock makes sure that the bag can't be trivially removed. Locking the bag it's self is as simple as putting a luggage lock through the zipper pulls.

With that said, the only thing you're going to prevent is casual theft. Anyone with a knife can get in there. If you want a little more security, consider a locking top-case.

I agree, your only option is to get a separate locking cable to strap the EDIT: 'bag' to your top triple, and a small lock for the zippers. Better options are getting a bigger backpack, or skipping the backpack/tankbag combo for a large tail bag. You could fit more stuff in one and than just carry it like a duffel bag with a shoulder strap. If you had some kind of clip you could just attach your tank bag to the carrying handle on the top of your bookbag and carry it all as one. Better yet, toss a bunch of magnets in the back pocket of your backpack, and the tank bag will stick right to it!

+1.

If you need something lockable and leave the bike parked in a not-so-safe place, a topcase is the safest and most practical choice IMO.
Got one last summer, couldn't be happier.
As others have said, a tankbag/tailbag is meant to be carried with you, if you sistematically leave it on the bike it's a theft waiting to happen.

Cheers

BTW: I try to avoid riding with a backpack. The idea of having a big heavy oddly shaped pack strapped to my back in a crash is not something that makes me comfortable. Imagine how you'd feel landing on whatever is in your pack.

well, seems my idea of a tank bag were wrong..  lol

none of the tail ones i like.. looks like ill just make do with my bag.

(i dont know who mentioned it, but i like to think of my bag as extra insurance in a crash:
A. there is usually a decent jacket in there
B. if its lookin like rain or realllly cold, ill have my leather pants in there too!
C. my laptop is like an extra 800 dollar back protector  :thumb:

well, thats that.

i just noticed i need new rear brakes....

I'm not too sure about that, but its definitely casual theft proof  :flipoff:

This is the ongoing issue that always makes me wish that more bikes were still styled like the SRADs from the late 90s. I still debate buying one sometimes, but they're starting to get outdated as far as the fast paced supersport world is concerned. I do love that styling though, and the size of that trunk is just amazing. This one isn't even packed, you could still fit a sweatshirt on top of all that stuff before you put the cover on...

That tail is like a locking top case all by itself. If I ever came across a 750 in this paint scheme for sale locally I don't know that I could pass it up.

That's probably your best bet. If someone wants it bad enough it won't stop them, but that should be enough to deter casual theft and it's the most secure option I've seen.
