Title: How much paint to paint 2 wheels on my GS?
Post by: Garrett on February 28, 2011, 08:24:06 PM
I'm going to do glow-in-the-dark paint on my GS's wheels for safety reasons  ;) :thumb:
Obviously, the paints expensive and I'd rather not order too much or too little.
How much would it take to do a decent job for coverage?

Thanks!

Here is the paint

Double check with your local authorities before you go ahead. You may find Illuminated Wheels are a "no no".

Glow paint. That's a new one.

Woah. $166 a quart? I can see why you're interested in the amount you'll need. Coverage is a question for the paint supplier. It depends on how it's applied and the thickness of coat required.

I see the V10 dust is significantly cheaper... from their forum: "Use V10 15-35 micron powder from Glow Inc available on the Specialty powders page and mix with an automotive clear coat at about 10 percent by weight. Spray like a car." I'd make sure that the clear doesn't include UV inhibitors or it would kind-of defeat the purpose:

I can tell you now, I'd be tempted to brush it on for 3 reasons:

1) I wouldn't want glow-in-the-dark-strontium overspray anywhere, and wouldn't risk my lungs (even with a mask) spraying it. But maybe I'm just paranoid.
2) You'll waste ~30% if you spray it to overspray... then get to rebreathe the overspray later (see 1)
3) Re: brush marks... I don't think the finish is as critical here.

Actually to be honest, I would like a decent finish  :dunno_black: call me crazy.

I'm gonna have to ask my buddy who is going to be spraying exactly how much reducers and such is going to be needed.

That's one way to force you to clean your wheels from brake dust and chain lube and so forth.

The reason it doesn't matter is that the V10 paint is flat. You will get the same finish either way.

Your friend will have the same questions you do on paint... need the paint spec sheet.
