Title: New (first) bike 1994 GS500E
Post by: jacob_ns on March 06, 2011, 02:55:13 PM
Just brought her home.

I've got experience on dirtbikes when I was younger but this'll be my first real bike. It'll pretty much be a machine to wrench on and maintain and be my commuter back and forth to work. I'm slated for the motorcycle safety course to get me going.

First thing is to change all the consumables as well as the fork oil.

Can't wait to get her out.

Nice, I like that color. I don't think those bars are stock? Much lower than mine.

I've got a question I hope someone can help with. It's about a mystery wire that's coming out of the bottom of the clutch handle and going into the headlight housing with the wiring, but it's not hooked to anything. See the pic below. Can anyone shed some light?

edit: Looking at the Haynes manual it looks like it's the clutch switch. Page 8-16 para 25. I just tried it and I can start the bike without pulling in the clutch (BAD!) and I was able to put it in gear while it sat on the side stand.

So now I have to figure out where the connections are but it doesn't look like there are any there. I have two unconnected leads in the housing which look like they're coming from the main wiring bundle under the frame but I can't be sure because it's all taped up. What's the best way to check with a multimeter if the sidestand microswitch is one of those two wires?

Edit again! : I fixed the problem. I disconnected everything and systematically followed the wiring diagram one by one and got it working. Sorry for spamming/talking to myself but I'm pretty pumped to have something to work on.

Thanks! I wasn't too hot on the colour in the sellers photos but once I saw it in person it really grew on me. As for the bars I'm not sure if they're stock or not. I do like the riding position they give though.

that's how my last bike was. The color in the pictures looked dried out and bland, but once I saw it in person it looked a lot better.

Glad you got the wires sorted! I think you can always start the bike without pulling the clutch lever in as long as it's in neutral. You can also start it in gear with the clutch lever pulled in. The switch should just make sure you don't start the bike in gear without the clutch lever in. It's a good habit to pull in the clutch lever regardless. Even when I start it without pulling in the lever I check for the neutral light then feel paranoid the bike is gonna lurch forward. It's really less convenient than just pulling in the lever, haha.

Good luck with the new (used) bike.  I'm riding a '96 GS500E as my first bike.  The MSF course was a great experience.  I've added a windshield and new tires. I tried dynabeads and I can't tell which helps more, but the ride is way smoother than before the new sneakers.  Hope the weather warms up for you.

Nice bike.
Sounds like someone disconnected all the safety switches. Easy to fix those.

How does the exhaust sound? What brand is it?  Looks like I have a used one of those in a box. Thought it was a Jardine, but yours has a different name on it.

i got a 89 as my first bike, solid as a rock even though its old and beat up

it has only not started once, and thats because i didn't connect the carbs to the engine...

other than that it has been great, and less problems than my buddies 05 drz
