Title: GS500E 89 Fairings
Post by: Gizmoman on March 08, 2011, 11:02:54 AM
Hi everyone.

Is it possible to replace the rear fairings on the 89 GS500E with the newer ones on the 2000 models? I would really love to have that rounded back end on my bike. Has anyone done it? Would it be a simple replacement?

Also can i swap the Fuel tank with the newer larger one? I understand that i would also have to replace the seat to a newer one. Is all this possible to be done on the 89 GS frame or are there any differences with the newer models?

Any help would be appreciated on this.

I have done it, it however was not easy, though the tail was the easiest part. You can make grommet carriers by bending steel plate (I used Stainless though) and mount it on that. I also got the new taillight to fit, and best of all, it fits in more sunken and that looks a lot better than the way it is on the 01+.
Cool.

Tnx for the reply. I thought that it would fit but didn't know how much work it would actually need. Well... I'm off to the Suzuki Dealer now :) Will post pics once done.

Once again tnx for the info.

I actually just did it to my bike not long ago. Not a hard task by any means if you are mechanically inclined at all. Basically, if you can take the tank off, you can put the new one on. The tail is easy if you get a couple L brackets, then all thats left is the front fairing, which I didn't do; I opted to keep her naked.  :thumb:

Made a HUGE difference in look, and a little bit in feel.

01+ tail needs 01+ seat and tail section.
I think 01+ seat can be made to fit with the 89-00 tank, but you want round all around I suppose.
The rear part of the seat - just under the grab bar needs small cubes of plastic or wood.
The seat has rubber nubbins - yes that is the official word. That bear on the frame, you need to get these making contact nice and good.
The seat latch ended up being a bit snug if you ask me after I was done, but it looked awesome.
Cool.
