Title: How to remove the choke slide?
Post by: tt_four on March 10, 2011, 08:31:23 PM
I'm giving my carbs a good thorough cleaning because the choke doesn't work. I'd obviously like to focus on the parts just for the choke since the bike runs well outside of the choke. How do I actually get the plungers out? I was looking at my carbs, I see where they are, and I see that those little black pieces are holding that bigger metal slider onto the carb bodies, but how do I go about pulling those plastic sleeves out without destroying them? They seem like the kind of part that I would gently poke at with some needle nose pliers and a thin screwdriver for a while, and then eventually they would break. Is there a trick to getting them out that I'm missing??

Are there brass nuts at the base? I could be thinking of different carbs.....

If I remember correctly, you can carefully pull one of the tab ends out of the track and the black plastic key will pull out of the channel.

That is the way I pull the tabs out. The choke slide will then come right out.

I poked at them for a while and eventually figured it out. The right side of those little black bushings can be gently squeezed with needle nose pliers and it'll easily slide out the left. It's easy when you know how, but otherwise you risk breaking it. Either way I've got them 100% disassembled and sitting on my work bench. I'll put them back together tonight or tomorrow. Then I've gotta finish up the valves.

Anyone know a good place to order shims online?

Glad to hear you got it.  The wiki says this is the place to get valve shims online
http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/valve_shims.htm (http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/valve_shims.htm).

I'm checking my valve clearances right now too.  Definitely call your local shops to see if anyone will just swap shims w/ you.  I had to call about 5 in the area till I found one that would.  I brought my own micrometer to check them when I went.  Now I'm just waiting on a more precise set of feeler gauges on it's way from Hong Kong... 7 - 14 business days  :2guns:!  But they were $6 and change shipped :)

That's definitely a decent deal depending on how much shipping is. I only need 2 so it's not a big deal either way. I thought they were closer to $20 some places. Ooh, looks like shipping on them would be $6. I may still call around to some shops but either way will work.

How thin are the feeler gauges you bought? Did you find any that went smaller than .04mm? that's the thinnest I could find.

Yeah, I got a set off ebay (hence Hong Kong).  It's got 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05, 0.06, 0.07, 0.08, 0.09, 0.1, 0.15. 0.2. 0.25, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0.  Now I'm waiting on it to get here so I can finish.

Really weird thing though.  I switched the shims and measured the gaps at the beginning of the week and they were .04 - .07 except one exhaust valve gap was just a little large (.10ish).  I manually cranked the motor around quite a few times before I checked an hour ago and three were a tight fit for my .038.  The fourth wouldn't even let it through.  I'm going to post this as a new topic too to see what I get for replys.  :dunno_black:
