Title: ~~WTB or trade for rear shock.~~
Post by: Firewalker on March 12, 2011, 07:43:07 AM
I did the SV shock mod and it fits just fine.  The stiffness is a good improvement but I just don't care for the additional height in the rear.  If you have any of the shocks that fit laying around and would like to get rid of it let me know.  If you are looking for a SV shock that is already cut/drilled and ready to pop in I am here for you!

I am looking around on the bay now but I would just as soon buy it from the community as anyone else.

Thx

Scott

Hey Scott,
Was the SV shock new when you installed it?

Can you comment on how the SV shock would compare with a Katana 600/750 shock?  I am trying to figure out which to put in but don't really know how to compare the two.

Thanks man,
Nathan

if you like the stiffness of the shock, consider making some lowering links to compensate for the height in the rear. all you really need is access to a drill press and maybe a bandsaw/scrollsaw to make the links, and you get to keep your shock

You want GS rear or something else? I've got an 04 gs rear for $10+shipping.

I've got a 89 katana rear that I'll give you for shipping, but it doesn't look like it's in good shape. I can get some pics if you're interested.

Hey there Nathan,
No the shock wasn't new but it is in very good shape.  The difference in the SV over stock is amazing.  The stock shock will sag and bottom out like mad.  It reminded me of a pogo stick or something like that.  My bike is a 99 and so was the stock shock.  When I first installed the SV shock I just put it in there the way it was set.  Way too stiff.  After a couple tips from here and a long screwdriver it was adjusted.  Doing the mod is pretty easy if you have the things you need.  A drill press and a flap disc and you are off to the races.  If you are planning to do this mod I would suggest looking in the wiki.  It is a very well done how to.  I can't compare it to the kat shock as I have not ridden on one except on a Kat.  From what I hear around here the Kat shock is the way to go, although there have been many shocks mounted on these bikes.  The only way I would advise you to install the SV shock is if you were 6' tall or more.  Maybe if you weigh a pretty good deal over 200.  I won't say it's a bad shock or choice but the extra height makes you slide forward on the seat.  That would be fine if I were on a different style bike......clip ons...up and back rear sets....more forward posture....but on this bike I just expect to cruise it.

I do have a drill press and if all it takes is drilling a new hole in the link I am all for that.  I have a bid in now on a newer shock .  I would hate to put one on that is 10 years older than the bike.  Thank you for the offer on the shipping  only deal.  Mine only has 10k miles on it believe it or not.  Thanks for the input guys.

If you like the shocks, I would consider a set of lowering links.

I believe I have a new set in a bin somewhere.
