Title: '05 Electrical Gremlins!
Post by: Maniac on March 12, 2011, 06:41:51 PM
Wow, haven't posted here since '04! Good lord, that was back when I was looking for my first bike. Been a long crazy road since then...

Anyway, on to business. I've gotten the parts I was waiting for to get the GS running, finally. So it's now sitting in the garage with new plugs, a new oil filter, and fresh oil in it with no leaks. I hooked it to the charger and let it bring the battery back to life after it's 8 month hibernation.

Problem is, there seems to be something wrong electrically. If I turn the ignition ON, I hear a CLICK from a relay and the headlight/taillight come on as do the 'Low Oil Pressure' and 'Neutral' indicators. This seems normal. However hitting the starter button does nothing (kickstand UP, clutch lever IN), no clicks, no dimming of the headlight. Nada. Zilch.

I've also noticed that the turn signals and horn aren't working.  :dunno_black:

I can only find one fuse on this darned thing, is that all there is? I'm guessing there is a relay somewhere or a loose connection. Is there a cutoff that needs to be reset after the bike is dumped? The previous owner's roommate laid it down at low speed when the chain jumped due to his inability to realize he had to lubricate it.  :cookoo:

I'm hoping to get her up and running with a new chain and then either convert it to a non-faired E version, or clean up the fairings that are on it. It looks pretty ratty right now, the previous owner tried to sell it to his roommate who was an idiot and really hosed it up badly. Then it's off to Craigslist!  :woohoo:

Could be a faulty connection around the kickstand or clutch switch preventing the starter from working. Or the kill switch is broken........or the start button is broken.

You said the signals and horn don't work, but what about the high beam switch?

Ok, the signals do work. Well, the right front does. I think the crappy aftermarket units that are installed are just shot.

The clutch switch tests OK, so it's not that. The high-beams work as well.

Tomorrow I'll check the starter relay and kickstand switch.

Not sure which switch/connection it was, but after taking everything apart and hitting it with WD40 it's working again. My guess is that, at some point during i's 6-month storage in a parking lot, some contact somewhere got dirty or corrosion on it.
