I am in need if a new rear tire. I am lookung for suggestions of what brands are best and what to stay away from. I have an 06 gs500f. I would like to go a little bit wider. Also, radial or bias?

I'd suggest staying away from the Chinese/Korean stuff for the time being, but I say that with no hands-on experience.
Stock tire sizes work best. Larger tires will add a little extra weight for no measurable benefit in performance. 140 is about the widest tire you can typically run in the rear, though a lot of riders shoe-horn on a 150. Bias ply is good with the stock suspension; there aren't too many Radial tires available for the GS. Avon RoadRiders or Pirelli Sport Demons are a good choice on the street. On the track, BT003RS is a good bet (it wears out a little too fast on the street. Expect 1000-2000 miles of life ridden hard.)
FWIW, I race my GS500. Front tyre is a 110/70/17 and rear is a 140/70/17 BT003RS.
