Well, to start off I have an 06 500f. 13,500 miles. I took it out this past week, changed air filter, changed oil and filter. jump started the bike and rode it to work then after struggling to get it started rode it back home. Last night I put the battery on a trickle charger. This morning I went to see if it helped with starting, If I put it on prime, and try to start it, it would attempt to start for a few seconds then die. So I turned it to on, put the choke on and it was having trouble and then all of a sudden I heard a loud crack come from the engine. Sounded like someone hit it with a hammer. hoping maybe it was a backfire I tried again with it on Prime and again started for a few seconds then died. Turned it to ON and Tried to start it and it wouldnt start. Put the choke on and Again BAM! the loud noise again. Whatever the noise is does not sound normal. It sounds like metal hitting metal. Anyone have this problem?
I already plan to do a valve adjustment very soon, and clean the carbs. I just havent had the time to get to it.
If any of you guru's out there could help me out I would greatly appreciate it. Especially since this is the first time I have heard this from the engine.
If you think its comming from the left lower side of the motor - its likely a starter clutch. If you ignore it, it will goat you.
Cool.
Buddha.
I cant really tell where its coming from. Just that its coming from the engine and its loud. When i get home from work ill try and investigate it.
As Budha says or you have left on prime, floats stuck open in carb, fuels dumped into cylinder.Whip plugs out and crank over,be careful if this is the case fuel will shoot out the plug holes and can ignite from the plugs if they`re near.
If this is so,you will need to clean carbs (check float and valve and o ring under the brass bucket),and change oil as it will have petrol in it.
(worst senario for this,it can break a con rod)
Im going to go home and pull the plugs and see what they look like. Its time to change them anyways. They are probably fouled out pretty bad.

How did you get a stuck float/overflowing carbs could be causing this loud banging noise? I'm not saying your wrong (if it comes across like that I'm sorry) I'm just having trouble making the connection myself. Can you explain? I would assume it would backfire or not start as it floods, but I can't see the "metal on metal" sound coming from this? Maybe if his rod snapped, but I've never heard this happen personally?
Thanks,
Nick
i could be wrong but its sounds like yer having similar problems to this thread:

you might find some info in there
yes!!! exactly the same sound that he has in his audio file. I put the battery on a trickle charger though so i figured the battery was good. Im going to go home and tinker...
utgunslinger13,if you get a tank full of gas leak into the bore the piston becomes hydro locked in the bore,no where for the piston to go except rattle against the bore.Having said that its just another poss` sugestion, has been known on various suzuki`s with prime.

I guess I assumed if there is enough gas in the cylinders to cause it to bang like that its going to break the rod. I had assumed it wouldn't bang around without breaking??
Problem fixed...for now. pulled the plugs and they were fouled pretty bad..bought new and she purred like a kitten.
