Title: Engine Case Guards for GS500E??
Post by: Ken in Regina on March 24, 2011, 07:24:50 PM
I've searched the site and the only hits I get are old. I've searched the internet and the only option I can find is a three-point SW-Motech case guard at Twisted Throttle. They are a silly price.  Does anyone have more recent information on other options at a more reasonable price? Thanks.

Search this thread and/or PM The Buddha on this forum. He was making some a few years back. I wonder if he has any left?

Search which thread? There was no link in your post.

Oops. I meant search this whole forum.

Here is the thread I had in mind. I don't know what became of the project... whether they got made and sold or what. Best send a PM to Buddha to find out.

Thanks adidasguy,

I didn't bother to mention sliders in my original post because I checked them out already. They are stupid expensive for what they are. Most of the ones I found were over a hundred bucks!

I suppose I should put this into its proper context. I'm sort of doing this under protest. I'm not really convinced I need anything. This is my 19th bike since I started riding in 1965. I've had only two bikes with engine guards. I've never needed them on any bike, dirt or street. But my buddies are bugging me that I need them. So if I can find something similar to the original OEM accessories for a cheap enough price I can get two benefits. I can get my buddies off my back. And I can use them as a different place to rest my feet on a long ride. ... Could even mount some freeway pegs on them if they didn't look so damn ugly!!

@5th Ave,

As I said in my original post, I did search. I searched the entire site, not just this forum. I used the internal search function and I also used Google's site search. And I searched the internet for purchase sources. Thanks for the pointer to that old thread. I've PM'd The Buddha.

You can go with the Suzuki factory engine bars - if you can find them. They mount on just 2 spots and might be something simple that you'd prefer. If I have an extra set I'd be willing to sell them. I won't know until I clean out the garage.

Here they are on someone else's bike:

Adisasguy, If Ken doesn't want them, I'm interested. Let me know...

Something simple like the OEM items is just what I'm looking for if I can find a pair in decent shape at a decent price.

I put the Suzuki guards on my 97 just to carry front pegs back when I was traveling more. Nice to be able to stretch a leg a bit while on the road or just move a leg to get rid of a cramp.

I hesitate to say this to a grouchy old moderator but dang! those things are ugly (the pegs, not the guards)!!  As a curmudgeon myself, I can say things like that to grouches.   :icon_razz:

I did have a set of freeway pegs on one of the bikes that had engine guards. That was on my '73 GT750. The pegs were ugly. But so was the bike. I sure had a great time with it, though. My wife and I put tens of thousands of miles on it all over western Canada and the Pacific Northwest US back before we had kids.

Not only were they ugly Ken but they wouldn't stay in place unless tightened with a long breaker bar.  Should have taken new pics since I soon replaced those pegs with some of these:

Riding year around here in NE Ohio the guards were soon rust covered, they go fast splashing thru the winter salt water once the paint is broken loose.  I took them off the 02 GS to repaint them a few years ago and had a heck of a time driving out the top motor mount bolt from the engine casting.  Someone here posted a pic a long time ago showing that bolt lug area broken off on their engine in the UK as I recall so I just decided to leave them off after that.

Jack, that's not encouraging me to mess around with the engine mount bolts on my '94!! Maybe better to just leave the engine naked than risk busting something trying to add farkles to "protect" it. ??  :cookoo:
