OK, just got my bike and finally a week later bought a helmet that fits me. Holy crap I did not know there was so much to a helmet. I thought it was all about the design and pictures on the outside. So after much looking around, trying them on/off I ended up with a JHC Paradox. Great fit, function and yes I got a great looking helmet.
So I wanted to throw this out. What does your helmet look like.
Let's see if we can post as many different styles and designs of helmets.
Here's my three of a kind :icon_mrgreen::
HJC CS-12N "Session"
(http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ6y-jBAMBMSvpUJGJHNVK663SWg2dScLiMKs7yyEahFhNBbOSFqg)OK for everyday city use, although quite noisy (and foggy).
Shark RSI "Shuriken"
(http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRPEA9nNAFHE-sO6JY-38R4cSTf3NwNg5ZDj7mNEkn9QG7MHY6T)Great helmet, pretty quiet, only downside is venting (the lack of it).
and HJC IS-16 "Type O"
(http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR2Yn8ZwqbssaDgdJqxAxKr7gbhmOlvInkAtEjOs7iv8meIuOX3RQ)Also a good helmet, good venting, sun visor could be better (it's too narrow).
Used to wear this one too, but it's complete garbage (so I gave it to a friend :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen:):
Airoh SV55
(http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSGYB1TR3UC27wwDKN-2CVOUfHb15uKSJxzvc_TL9l1beFXrFcC)Total crap, very noisy and foggy, the only good thing is the sun visor.
Here's mine. Shoei RF-1000 The blue is a perfect match for my GS
(http://wingstuff.com/magick_image.php?path=pgroups%2F4165_image1.gif&scale=350%3E)
R-Jays Dakkar - was fine for electric bike (lots of room to breath) but the visor leaked badly at high speed and in the rain

HJC CL-SP Typhoon (as of 11 hours ago!)
Shoei RF-1000
(http://images.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/2009-Shoei-RF-1000-Metallic-Helmet.jpg)
HJC CL-Max
(http://images.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/i21790.jpg)
Shoei RJ Air
(http://images.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/RJLSLVR.jpg)
Summer RF-1000 full face with light tint shield, winter CL-Max flip face, and when it's over 90F the old RJ-Air open face. They match my 02 black and silver GS500, black and silver summer mesh jacket, and winter black leather jacket. :thumb:
Until this week:
HJC CL-12 in metallic blue solid. Not bad for the price. Not bad at all.
As of this week:
Shoei Qwest. Slightly better ventilation and noise than the HJC, but probably not worth the 3x cost.

and HJC IS-16 "Type O"
(http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR2Yn8ZwqbssaDgdJqxAxKr7gbhmOlvInkAtEjOs7iv8meIuOX3RQ)Also a good helmet, good venting, sun visor could be better (it's too narrow).
I'm looking at picking up one of those this spring. I really want the built in visor. Is it dark enough to be effective? I've always used the darkest tinted visors I could find, and it seems like the built in visors are usually lightly tinted. They have a Scorpion EXO-1000 at the cycle gear here in town for only $130 but it's 1 size too small so I had to pass. Either way I'm due for a new one this spring, my Arai is 7 years old, plus the tinted visor broke and I'm not looking to spend $600 on a new one when i need a new helmet anyway.

Shoei RF-1100 that I bought last week to replace my failing AGV. The AGV was my first helmet... and it was OK... but this is much better.
Gmax helmet. Great ventilation. Visor is very clear. It is a bit noisy at speed, but it serves its purpose and it was pretty inexpensive.

X-lite 801rr Ago-replica. Mine doesn't have those api and MV Agusta stickers on it.
i have a cheap ass HJC thats nothing more then a paper weight.... (it wrapped in the sun and now the visor tends to fly off and whistle)
and my new helmet about 4 weeks old is Shoei XR 1100 Warlord

Can you tell I prefer Shoei helmets?
Sorry. No pics. Gotta figure out how to get pics from my smartphone (?) to this site. :embarassed:
I got a Scorpion EXO
Blue/white
Flip up sun shades (which I think is awesome - didn't know they existed)
Lots of vents
finger pump for cheek pads :dunno_black:
Completely washable
Very nice looking & matches perfectly w/my bike :thumb:

I'm looking at picking up one of those this spring. I really want the built in visor. Is it dark enough to be effective? ...
Nah... not really. The local supplier only had the standard "smoke" one, not the "dark smoke" I've seen on eBay (for $26.21).
Apparently they're not importing the darker one here, because of the homologation issues. :dunno_black:
Pure orange Shoei RF-1100. Amber shield on most of the time. Doesn't match anything. Sticks out like an angry sun. Cagers tend to notice angry suns! :thumb:

Shoei TZ-X Sprite - First helmet purchase, after trying on every other one that I found at the bike stores :thumb:
used to wear a Joe Rocket 101 with mirrored visor.. but just recently purchased a Fulmer SS
the difference in those two helmets is insane! the rocket one is more round, while the Fulmer is oval (if that makes sense)
the fulmer fits perfectly! and the visor is 10000% optically correct. (there is zero distortion)
i had to purchase a second helmet for the GF :thumb: and since my rocket one fit her perfectly, i went ahead and got myself something that fit too :)
or those of you who need a good entry helmet that rocks.. check out a fulmer!
First Helmet:
Z1R Phantom
(http://i329.photobucket.com/albums/l400/sphsfootballstar/2009-Z1R-Phantom-Solid-Helmet-Rubatone-Black.jpg)
This helmet saved my noggin quite a few times. It's a very sturdy helmet.
Second Helmet:
HJC Barbwire
(http://i329.photobucket.com/albums/l400/sphsfootballstar/HJCCLSPBRBWRMC5F-2.jpg)
DOT and SNELL approved. BaltimoreGS and adfalchius bought it for me for my birthday.
Started with some HJC that did not fit well at all. Took it back to the store after finding a JMax GM68 that is okay. I have some serious fogging problems, but I have not really done anything to try and stop it. Fits well, and most importantly the price was right :icon_mrgreen:.

This is an arai, don't remember what kind but it's at least 7 years old now. It's in line to be replaced this spring. Spray painted after seeing the KBC with the star on the side I really liked.

Shark RSX
Got one from old stock, 2004, for $175
One of the fews helmets to have a green impact result on all areas in the sharp tests. Awesome ventilation, THICK shield with anti-fog treament that works really well and is infinitely adjustable.
My Helmet with weekend visor on it. Clear visor for week day riding. Cannot find my other helmet it has vanished.

I rock a Shoei RF-1000 did a write up in the wiki about it. Not a good pic. Almost time for replacement. Would like to get a modular but don't know if my arthritic neck could handle the extra weight.

Plain white (cheaper) Shoei Tz-1 or Qwest; I like the Tz-1 better, but it's 10 years old. White reflective stickers (the gray dots on the helmet in the avatar).

Solid white HCJ IS-16. Very comfortable, well vented.
HJC IS-16 Scratch in Black
I got ripped-off by the stealership for this one but it is great. Great venting and a breath guard to go with the flip down shades (fighter pilot anyone? :thumb:)

Same here, except it's silver.
I like it so far - ventilation should be better though IMO.
Only real downside is I can only use it closed - mine is only homologated as a full-face and I could be fined if caught with chin piece up by LEOs. Recent examples have dual homologation. :dunno_black:
Twisted - LOL @ the LEGO visor :D
Scorpion Exo-400
(http://motorcycleridergear.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/2009_Scorpion_EXO-400_Rebel_Helmet_Matte_White.jpg)
ICON Airframe Death or Glory
(http://www.alivetoride.com/images/icon_airframe_death_or_glory_helmet_white.jpg)
Pretty much wear the Scorpion anywhere, I don't mind strapping it under the seat since it was only $65. I only really wear the Icon on group rides or when I don't plan on stopping for more than a smoke. Kind of a pain in the ass carrying a helmet with you everywhere.
This is my first helmet (only been riding for a week). Ventilation's not the greatest, but it was a good price for a modular.
I am using a Bell M1 at the moment. I crashed with it twice and it fell a few more times so it's full of scratches.. it will be replaced with something quieter soon. (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4074/4786951710_b920ef9cf1.jpg)
My other helmet is a Shark RSX, great lid but the ventillation is awful.
Just ordered an hjc FS10! motorcycle superstore has them on sale for $140(original was $250). Looking forward to trying to drop down sun visor.
(http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/252105_2092014023225_1331504559_2472272_423263_n.jpg) AFX FX-39
I bought this one last month sometime. I like the wide view shield. It doesn't ratchet up/down but it is so smooth to open and close. I wanted a visor on my helmet for that shaZam! Houston sun in the afternoons and it helps but not as well as I'd hoped. Inside is A+ comfortable. The best part is the ventilation! Air flow rocks. Overall I'm glad I picked it up. :thumb:
I want an ICON Variant, can't spare the cash right now though.
I scored an Arai RX-Q from ebay with an extra shield, in box, for 350 shipped. Great deal IMO.
I like the helmet, great venting and its pretty light.
That HJC FS10 I bought is on sale here....
http://monstersportsinc.com/street/index.php?contentID=2854&product_category=244&productID=3469
It makes a little bit of a whistling noise sometimes, but I have no way to do if that's just mine or if that's an HJC thing. Either way I really like it and it's an awesome deal for this price, if anyone's looking for something new.
https://www.leatherup.com/site/product?pid=54921
Had to get something asap for the course and a deal I thought I was getting soon after.
So my funds were limited. (had to buy a jacket and gloves too) $150 for all.
Surprisingly decent air flow, sunglasses never fog up but my glasses do even with the visor up when standing still, never seen if they are good while riding because of that.
No visual restrictions at all!
and quite comfortable.
Only bad thing, Cannot find a tinted or reflective replacement shield for it.
After Hours of searching, I found just ONE web site that sells them.
Ordered one but its been on Pending status for almost a week now!
(leatherups whole seller has them but I cant buy them off there)
Already have a replacement picked out when I get some extra ca$h.
Nothing wrong with current one, but what I picked out is 10X nicer.
Can you get another clear one? You could get some of that window tint from the auto parts store and cover the inside of one yourself.
Why am I a bit disappointed and oddly chuckling inside, that not many posted up pics of there ACTUAL helmet, most copying and pasting a promo or advert pics of said Helmet rather than an actual helmet they may or may not own.....
Um, not that it really matters, in the grand scheme of life, LOL...
Pure laziness on my part! :tongue2:

Because it is easier to use an existing photo on the net than to go hunt for the camera get it out, realize the battery is flat, charge it up, go take the photo, load them on your pc, upload it to photo bucket and post it. :flipoff:

Pretty much entry level helmet, cost about $230aud when I brought it, feels great on my head compared to other helmets.

Well, I think I did an entire write up on my Shoei RF-1000 and don't think many people bothered to read it. I retired that helmet and got a Seven Zero Seven Vendatta 2 from Cycle gear for $110. I didn't have the budget for another Shoei as this was a graduation present. I have the gloss black color just like the Shoei. I'm debating on weather I want to do a full write up. Is it worth the time for no one to read?
First impressions it is quiter than my Shoei at speed. I like that it has little pockets for my stereo. It breathes amazing! Lots of vents. It seems lighter. The not so likes the visor seems a little cheap and doesn't always seal shut like the Shoei did. My Oakleys don't fit comfortably like the Shoei but I'm guessing it needed to be broken in more.
Overall I think a great deal for Snell approved helmet. BTW Cyclegear had great customer service.
Haven't taken pictures yet!

I read the write up Mary. Just cause people don't comment on it does not mean it doesn't get read. I love my Shoei RF1000 in matt black. It is heavier than my Shark that I use for night time riding but comfier.

^^^^ You are a braver man than I. :icon_lol:
haha!!! yeah I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like being the center of attention riding through town. :icon_mrgreen:
thats a great helmet. any helmet that catches peoples attention makes you more visible! hopefully drivers will also notice your helmet.
I like that one too. It did make the 'ugliest helmet' list on motohouston though.
It makes me hungry.
Watermelon colors ftw!
nice helmet tho :)
yep thats one of the reasons why I like it so much. Its a very bright green so people do notice me while I'm riding around. might keep a few people from cutting me off or pulling out in front of me because they didn't see me.
or hit you because they are trying to figure out what your helmet is and not what your doing.

Hey Paulcet! We've got the same helmet...

Though I think you said yours was blue?
I got mine off Craigslist - $30 and only been used once or twice. I really need to get either an orange or black one to match my GS.
Here is my Seven Zero Seven Vendetta 2! I like it alot. Even more when I grabbed the tinted visor! Although, when it's cool out it vents a little too well. But, I'm sure I won't even remember that come our Florida summer!

Not crazy about the EXO400 that I bought.. Had to buy size like xxxl cause they run incredibly small.. Some of the vents have already broken (can't push them open anymore) and the visor fogs like crazy....
Heres mine and its very sweet.

Good ventilation yet you can close them in the winter and keep it warm. Feels sold. It has a LED array that can blink in the back that I feel acts like a 3rd brake light on a car. It might not help to much but it can't hurt.

Is the visor dark enough to help with direct sun? I had difficulty finding one that was dark enough. I almost bought a Bell Revolver, but the visor was only about 20% or so, and I'd really like something darker than that.
Yes, it is.
Sometimes, I forget to put it down. Sun dotn bother me much, so I may be the wrong person to ask.

I added a Scala Rider G4 headset that I listen to the radio or music from my phone on, worth the $100 I spent on the headset, but I wouldn't spend any more!

my dad wants this helmet. Diff graphics but this exact helmet. What do you think of it now?
Hi Gorilla!
It's a good helmet, just not sure it's the best one can get.
I have mixed feelings about it....maybe I'm not the best person to tell you, because this is my first real good helmet. I only had other XR1R and a LS2 Flip Up helmet before, I won't consider the late a decent helmet.
That said, here is what I think of it:
Pros:
Light, mine is not the carbon version and still really light, lighter than most high end helmets. Mine had 1370 Grams with visor, Although it has a cost, see cons;
Widest field of view one can get. Better just....well, with a flip up helmet...
Decent ventilation, no need to open visor at cruising speeds, only at stop and go at hot days;
Comes with pinlock, which does the job really well;
Simple construction, replacement parts are easy to replace (broke front vent);
Ergo padding system, let's you tune the helmet, even after it break in you can add more pads to make it tighter.
Quick visor change, simple mechanism, and simple+cheap to replace in case of wear.
Can change cheek pads or full interior padding, for other sizes (Xr1r's have 3 shell sizes).
Nice aerodinamic behavior, I can get my head out of the windscreen at 280 Kmh.
Cons:
Being soo light, thay had to shave weight in some parts. Chin vent broke with just a one meter fall. Cost=5€. Top vents "feel" fragile too.
I find it a bit noisy, but I never tried any other decent helmet to compare, maybe it's in the "regular" noise range.
Different jackets, I feel the air passing by in different ways. Not sure it's supposed to happen, but it changes a lot.
The new visor locking/changing system is fragile. Those side parts break easily with a bit too much force in the wrong way, or a small fall. Although dealer gave me replacements for free.
I guess it makes a great racing helmet, although there may more comfortable helmets for touring, even if not so light. You dad should really try the helmet and ride with it before buying it. Opinions in these helmets change a lot depending on the person you ask. I know a bunch of users that use this helmets because it's produced here, in Portugal, it's very popular around here, and opinions diverge a lot.
More confused than you were?! :icon_mrgreen:

Not the best helmet I could have bought but after working it in, the helmet fits great and had good air flow and I just love the design
Wooooo old thread!!!!
But most of the pics still work and it was an interesting scroll through 7 pages.
Thought I'd add a helmet I painted about 4 years ago. I hardly ever wear it but... what do I do with it lol? I use it for when I have a passenger :icon_rolleyes:
Painted it red with spray can and then did all the detail with sharpie markers. The visors I did with perforated sticky vinyl, spray paint and markers. Had a little bit of trouble finding the vinyl in a small amount... eventually bought some from a local sign shop.

It doesn't show up in the pics but the visor with dark eyes is actually one of those mirror visors... not just a plain smoke one. I made two because I figured one looks like the cartoon (white eyes) and one looks like in the movies with the mirror/shiny eyes 8)
Holy crap, that spidey helmet is AWESOME!! And I agree, old thread but it was neat to see all the different helmets. Here's mine, just a cheapo amazon special, but I love it. It fits great, and I love how it looks. I wish I had a clear visor for it so riding at dusk was easier.
This is mine:
http://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/197705
It has a clear visor because tinted visors are not allowed when it's dark here. Cheap, cheerful, temporary. I need to replace it now but I don't have the money, and I feel like sookie might have to go soon too, can't afford to run the car and bike anymore
Thanks Torstein!!! I'm glad you enjoyed the thread revival too :D My spidey helmet was a cheap Bilt one from Cycle Gear I think and it is comfy and fits good etc I just have a different one I like to wear more. I will post it at some point too.
Even though yours is a "cheapo amazon" one, I like it! And also, have you tried searching on ebay (or amazon too) for a clear visor for it? That's what I did with my helmets... looked at the brand and the model of the helmet and did a search that way.
63, awesome of you to share your helmet as well! I am sad to hear about the possibility of you having to give up sookie... that's just... no no no that just can't happen no :nono:
My two Icons.

Variant "Hard Luck" with a silver mirror shield, and an Airmada "Lucky Time" with a clear shield. Basically day and night helmets, since I don't like bringing shields with me and the Variant's is hard to change anyway. If I know I'll be riding into the dark hours I'll use the Airmada and slip on some sunglasses. The Variant is my day-time hooligan helmet.
I like the duality these have. I had the Variant first and the "Hard Luck" graphic sort of spoke to me. #13, "Hard Luck", "No Rest for the Wicked", "Cheat Death, Tempt Fate", all of these are phrases on the helmet somewhere and 2 years ago when I got that helmet I was in a tough spot. Had a hard time finding a job, my bike was junky and more than once could have gotten me killed from it's own junkiness, I DID low-side on it, I didn't have my own place to live... Nothing seemed to be going my way, I was the embodiment of "Hard Luck." Always on the losing end, but somehow always hanging on.
Now that I have a steady job, a new gig as an MSF instructor, my own place to live, and a beautiful new motorcycle the "Lucky Time" was a definite choice for a second helmet. #7, "Born to Win", "Always Cheat, Always Win", and "Fortune Favors the Bold."
Took some chances in life, made accomplishments, did everything I could and more to prosper, and now I'm in a better spot. Even though I'm no longer the embodiment of "Hard Luck", that Variant still speaks to me, and the Airmada is a great counterpart.
And of course, Sena SMH10Rs on both!
I'm still wearing my old Airoh J106, modelled here by my little girl...

I wear a matte black HJC CL-17. No need to post a picture, because it looks like every other matte black helmet out there. I like it though - fits well, and since I wear glasses, it accommodates those nicely as well. My brother has an Arai, but since he recently damaged his helmet when he laid his bike down at speed, he's going to purchase a CL-17 as well.
I like the HJCs too. I wear a white and a yellow helmet, both plain solid colors, both Arai. I like them but I really like the chin curtain on HJC rather than the pull-down chin guard on Arai. HJC also has a better visor mechanism.
I really like my Suomy Apex helmet.
Mine is all white and got a free smoke lens with the purchase. They have different shells for different sizes.
Pretty light and fits my semi round head. It is a bit on the louder size though.
My first helmet was a scorpion exo 400 which i really liked.
oooo white with a smoke lens sounds really cool... I will have to google it to see what it looks like! (if you included a pic, I can't see it cuz I'm on the computer at work lol)
I have some down time here and I'm bored so I'll post up my main helmet now.
I painted this one right around the time I painted the Spidey one. It's just a cheap TMS from ebay but I love how it fits and how the visor clicks and the price was right. I've loved Slipknot since the 9th grade (even though the more recent stuff I don't much care for) and so it was an obvious choice for me to paint a helmet like Corey's early mask.
Same as the other helmet, I spray painted it and then did all the detail work with sharpies. The dreads are material I got from Joann Fabrics.

I do have a clear visor for this one... for riding in the rain. If the vinyl print on the visor gets wet, I might as well just close my eyes :icon_sad: I love when I come up behind someone in a car and they start turning around like omg wtf and I wave at them and they wave back haha

Bell qualifier, Rally Hi-Vis graphic. Love this helmet but the standout is the Transitions face shield. The face shield actually cost more than the lid itself but I honestly won't go back, perfect visibility at any time and in any conditions without any messing around. Honestly so worth it if you ride in all sorts of weather or commute on the bike.

This is the AGV Diesel Full Jack. It's gonna be my second helmet. Pretty soon here, I'll be riding my GS500E for the first time after it was stolen last summer. Its since been stripped down, repainted and rebuilt all by myself. My first big motorcycle project.
I'll be riding around the Seattle area in a few days. If we cross paths, throw me a wave, yeah?
Just ordered a Bell RS-1, will try to post more once I get it. I was going to an Icon but found this Bell for $190 on closeout, normally $400.

Open face with a flip up curved and removable visor. I cannot stand the reduced visibility and claustrophobic full face helmets.

Can't recommend HJC enough, inexpensive, DOT and Snell approved, and lots of styles to choose from.
Well alrighty then... I posted a couple months ago in this thread about wanting a clear visor for my helmet... Never got around to it since I typically don't ride at night, but....It's quickly becoming fall around here and now when I leave for work in the morning and come home late at night, it's dusk/dark. So I've just been riding with my visor up and wearing clear sunglasses to protect my eyes. I said 1 thing to my wife, just 1 thing, a minor passing comment, about getting a clear visor for my existing helmet, and she sends me a link for a local helmet for a good price with a clear visor already. Duh, I'm not about to pass up another helmet, they are nice to have. This one is a HJC and it's my first SNELL approved helmet, I can definitely tell/feel a difference with this one. Much better protection with SNELL. Just picked it up last night so no pictures yet, but it should work nicely for these early morning and late nights! Yeesh, spent more on the extra helmet than I would have on a visor, but I can't complain about that!
Bump for new peeps! Let's see those brain buckets!

Its pretty horrid, fogs up whenever it can and buffers pretty badly above about 50.
looks like the Dept. for transport gave it 2/5! Yes! (https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/testsratings/takachi-tk30)
Crashed in an HJC, staying in an HJC though I ended up with a 400 dollar model.. only thing I regret is buying in MATTE, NEVER BUY MATTE HELMENTS, THEY TURN TO CRAP SO QUICKLY.
idk what one i have lol bought it for 200 at a dealership but lowsided and have yet to buy a new one :o

A crashed helmet is a crashed helmet. Once the EPS liner is compressed it stops being protective against impact.
Yes, wearing a damaged helmet is better than no helmet at all, but it's not something I would consider doing long term. It may not be able to prevent a concussion.
im only wearing it on my ride to the dealership to get a new helmet

Nolan N104 Absolute. It is replacing an N103 that I've been sporting for 7 years......I have to say it is SOOOO much nicer than the N103. It feels lighter, breathes better, sun visor operates smoother and is spring loaded, etc. Next payday I'll be getting a tinted visor for it, and I'm currently waiting for an "eBay special" bluetooth in the mail.

Drop down internal visor was top priory for my last helmet too.. don't think ill ever go back to a helmet where I have to carry a whole clear visor just encase it got dark! I just really wish I didn't get matte... did I say that already? Doh.. I really wish I didnt get matte. :)

I don't trust those, ever since crossing train tracks at night and having one flip down on me from the rough crossing, effectively blinding me.
But I like the idea for the convenience, especially since I'm mainly a commuter. That's why I'm getting a Shoei RF1200 next. Photochromic lens for the WIN!
Walker, it sounds to me like your matte helmet is a good candidate for a fresh paint job......
Watcher - the visor dropped down? That sounds like a failure of the helmet somehow. The visor on both my old N103 and the new N104 both take some leverage to get them to move. Heck the N103 visor would probably break the mechanism before it dropped unexpectedly.
Could have been. Could have been when the visor was retracted it wasn't past the detent, this helmet didn't have one that was spring loaded, in that case it would have been user error.
Either way, I was lucky I didn't run into anything, all I could see for a couple of seconds was tail-lights.

Got my first Shoei, and in the spirit of "go big or go home" I went with an X-14. Haven't ridden in it yet, spent the evening learning the ins and outs and just ogling it. My tired Icon got a good deep-cleaning and tomorrow when it's all dried off I'll reassemble it and set it on a shelf. It'll make a decent backup helmet so I don't want to just toss it like my last helmets, and rather than shut it away in a closet I might as well display it.
But this post isn't about my Icon, it's about my Shoei!

No, I have a Dainese jacket.
Yeah, it's decidedly Japanese. But I don't like AGV, I wanted a Shoei, I wanted an X14, and of all the graphics I like the Marquez Motegi the best.
It IS a Japanese helmet, so I figure that's good enough, and the cat is a symbol of good luck/fortune so... :dunno_black:

The X14 does come in bunch of really cool blue designs, none of them were quite my style though.
I'll be sure to chime in on my thoughts after riding it, both initially and after some time.

Amazing!
I've worn it on the road for a grand total of about 45 minutes now and it's already made an incredibly positive impression. How much of that is still "new toy syndrome" and how much will still be there in 10, 20, 100, 1000 hours of use remains to be seen, but so far here are the takeaways.
It's quiet. I knew my Icon made a good amount of wind noise, but I never knew how bad it was until I rode in this Shoei. Only had it up to about 60mph, but at that speed the wind noise is... Well, it's still there. But it sounds... Distant? Muffled? Like, ok, the Icon was windy. You could identify the source of the wind noise as being at the helmet. A breeze blows by, you hear it, you pick up speed, you hear it, as you turn your head to check a blind spot you can hear the volume change and you can hear the source rotate, and it's not really IN your ears but it's at your head. The Shoei sounds like... Like you're sitting in your car on a windy day. The wind noise is there, but it's not generated by any particular vent or crack that the air is using to enter the helmet, it sounds like the wind noise is just from the helmet being physically in the way of the wind, if that makes any sense. It's almost surreal. Sounds like the road around you and the engine are still clear and the wind sounds so much farther away. Totally different world-view when riding.
Speaking of the wind, aerodynamically it's amazing! There's this one valley I always ride through that often has a cross breeze, and in addition to pushing me and my motorcycle it tends to push my head. This time when I hit that patch I reflexively moved my neck, but it resulted in my held tilting INTO the wind rather than just resisting it. Turning my head to check a blind spot meets no kind of resistance or change in air pressure, which is odd considering the swept shape of the X14, and it makes the helmet feel WAY lighter on my head despite the X14 being about 100 grams
heavier than the Airmada. Never thought I really got any kind of wind buffetting around town in the Icon, but in the Shoei something felt inexplicably different. Then I realized my head was just more stable, lol! This also made the helmet feel lighter on my head, I think, since I wasn't using neck muscles to fight the wind.
Airflow is... interesting. The Airmada has basically 4 main vents: Two chin vents that open directly through the EPS into your face, a nose vent that opens to the shield, an eyebrow vent that is directed straight through the EPS to your forehead, and a top diffuser that is channeled in some external ducts. This does a decent job, you feel wind directly on your forehead and chin/mouth, and I never really felt excessively hot inside even on 110°F+ days of riding.
The X14 has a chin vent that opens into the
cheek pads, a nose vent that opens to the shield, an eyebrow vent that appears to go straight through the EPS to the forehead, and the top diffuser which is channeled along the top of the EPS. I can't feel any of these creating direct airflow on me, not even the eyebrow vent, but what I DO feel is the entire padding system cool down. The cheeks feel cool, the liner feels cool, even the back of my head feels cool, and you can feel this temperature change as it happens. I'll be sitting at a light and gradually warming the helmet via body-heat (head-heat?), then as I pull away I can feel the temperature of the pads drop noticeably. Even more fun, after the helmet sat inside an air-conditioned building all day and the pads were saturated with cold air, and for the first mile or so the pads actually felt COLD when air was passing through them!
I dig it, I can't wait to see how this does in the dead heat of summer next year, and I expect it should be much more effective at keeping the wind OUT when winter comes around and I start closing the vents.
FOV is going to take some getting used to. The X14 was specifically designed for the 3/4-full tuck, so it's actually rolled a little back on the head to give you better sight-line when leaned over. The pads are actually adjustable to make it even more extreme, but I'll be leaving them in the most upright position. Feels good on the bike, but my muscle memory from my Icon has me looking "up" and in the Shoei that places the sun directly in my eyes and cuts off my view of the speedometer. Relaxing my neck a little to drop my chin down made it just about perfect.
Negatives so far: The breath guard hits the tip of my nose when installed, but I can learn to live with it, especially if it helps with fogging when it starts to get cooler out. Otherwise? :dunno_black:
I mean, a negative could be that it was expensive. But I can definitely see where all the money went. This wasn't pieced together from "good ideas", this was engineered from the ground up with years of R&D sunk into it using the best possible materials and such. $800 is a steal for this helmet, especially considering an X14 is
the helmet that racers like Marc Marquez are using while an AGV Pista is almost twice the price (and I'm betting it isn't twice the helmet).
I dig it. Much the same as with other things I once thought needlessly expensive (like Spyderco knives) I've metaphorically "seen the light" on Shoei. So far it's pretty damn cool, and I'm very happy I bought it, and I'm wondering what else in the motorcycle apparel world I've been missing out on, lol!
If their flagship helmet is any indication the entire Shoei lineup is awesome, and has me thinking the $400 RFSR is a bargain at that price.

Can you update on your shoei helmet on the helmet thread? I saw your post and was wondering if you're still liking it?
After having it for close to a year now I can find little bad to say about it. It's a little loud maybe, for a Shoei that is, but it's still WAY quieter than my Icon was and likely is still quieter than a good 95% of helmets on the market. Wind buffeting is almost zero thanks to the aerodynamics, the FOV is second to none, it's optically perfect, the PinLock system works flawlessly, the ventilation in general is superb, and the vented cheek pads are the best thing that nobody else does.
I did end up switching out that gold shield for a silver, IMHO it does look a lot better. I also picked up a Transitions Photochromic shield for it, and as a commuter that is something that's quite revolutionary.
I also removed the breath deflector, with the PinLock in it hardly mattered anyway. I also added the little chin spoiler (not the chin
curtain, the chin
spoiler) and it works well as a general comfort thing by keeping the wind off my neck.
I was able to take an RF-1200 for a test ride and while it felt a
teensy bit lighter weight and was just a
liiiitle bit quieter I found that I actually missed the vented cheek pads more than I thought I would. I was considering an RF-1200 as a backup/secondary helmet, but I think I'd rather just have another X14.
Still on the fence about an Arai. I really would like a Corsair X, but mostly because I'm trying to not be a Shoei fanboy and want to expand my experience. The Corsair X has an exhaust that pulls from the cheek pads and the Arai Pro-Shade system is an interesting concept but I think I'm going to miss the proper vented cheeks of the X14 and Shoei's Photochromic.
I realize that for the average rider a $750
starting price helmet is a bit of a steep investment, but it's got my 10/10 would buy again seal of approval on it. I'll admit to being a bit spoiled by it, as evidenced by me being kind of "meh" about the RF1200 (which by all means is still an amazing helmet), but I try to tell it like it is. Everything Shoei is quality, and the X14 is their flagship so it has all the best technologies. If you can find the means the X14 is the pinnacle of helmet design and function IMHO, it even has a 5 star SHARP rating in addition to it's SNELL and DOT/ECE certifications, something many other models from Shoei do
not have.
And just so the post is legit, here's more pictures of it.
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/923/hNvfNL.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pnhNvfNLj) (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/923/hk5CnB.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pnhk5CnBj)
And just to point out the vents:
On the back of the helmet you can possibly see 1, 2 and 3, and 4 along the top under the silver "flaps", but you
can't see the ones hidden under the rear wing (the part with the Shoei logo and Kanji text). Maybe you can see that the wing is suspended off the helmet, it works well to create a vacuum for the exhaust vents within.
On the front of the helmet, on the top is that ram-air style intake, above the shield are the eyebrow vents, then just below the shield the main intake, and just below that the cheekpad intake.
Once again, nothing is direct to skin so it doesn't seem to dehydrate me like my Icon tended to do, but the amount of air moving around and through the liner of the helmet is massive enough to make a tangible cooling effect.
I own an HJC FG-ST and I couldn't be happier with it. My previous IS-17 saved my head, and this was a really good upgrade. Far more comfortable, better sun visor, better venting, softer cheek pads, and less wind noise. Although I have kind of fallen in love with the RHCP-70 as well.
