GS 500 engine was developed from the GS450, they've all had 6 gears since the early 80's. 1 down, 5 up.

sounds likely that I just dont fully understand the gearing mechanism, which is not a stretch at all. I'll go check it out.

Down 1, up N 2 3 4 5 then it appears to stop...

In what appears to be top gear 60 mph is at about 5k, I also struggled to push it to 85 mph at something like 8k rpm.

Keep in mind that when you shift UP, you go right through neutral to 2nd. You're only in neutral when the green light is on.
60mph at 5k rpm sounds right for 6th gear.

+1

However, in 6th and 7000rpm you should roughly be doing 87mph.

How about some pics of your bike, both sides.

Humble pie time, it seems I was quite wrong. Just never took enough notice to correct my initial assumption 6 months ago.

So yea, false alarm and all that. Anyway thanks! Next time I'll think before asking.  :D
