Post by: jiggersplat on November 10, 2003, 09:11:47 AM
hey,

got a question or two for the san diego folks... i'll be out there for work, around the downtown area, and maybe out on coronado.  any recommendations for places to stay/eat/hang out/things to do?  oh, and does anyone out there rent bikes other than harleys?

thanks,
dan

How long are you in town for?
If you are going to be downtown, you got to check out the gaslamp area. It is a couple of blocks that is filled with bars and restuaraunts.
It is starting to get a little cold to go to the beach, but you never know with the weather here.

if getting a little cold is 60's, i think i can handle it.  not sure exactly how long i will be around for yet.  somewhere between 3 days and a week maybe.

What will be your mode of transportation?
If you got the Supra, i could recommend some nice drives. I am assuming you won't be on the bike :)

probably some crappy ass rental car unfortunately.  i WISH i could bring my supra out there.  i was out in san fran/san jose/santa rosa a few years ago for some job interviews.  highway 1 is the greatest road in the universe as far as i can tell.  i might be visiting a friend up in LA the weekend after, so if you've got a nice route from san diego to LA that'd be swell.

thanks,

Man, LA is the land of exotica.  I know there is a place in Newport Beach that rents Corvettes, Porsches and Ferrari's.  I wonder what a day with a Ferrari 328 would run you.

The Old Town Mexican restaurant is a great place!  Get a pitcher of mango margurita.   You eat there and don't like it I'll refund your money.

Tons of good food in the Gaslamp district.
There is a BBQ resteraunt across from the San Diego covention center. Sorry, I dont remember the name but it stands out as the only place more that 10years old. That is the retraunt/bar where they filmed a lot of the scenes from Top Gun. Seemed a lot smaller in real life.

i believe the top gun place is kc bbq...

coronado is nice, check out (of course) the hotel del coronado.  i don't know about the night life out there.  i figure it's pretty much limited to dining.  gaslamp is always hopping, more so towards the end of the week.  the bitter end is a good place to check out.  martini ranch is a decent place but way overprice IMO.  tivoli is a cool divebar on 6th & island.  also landlord jim's on 16th & broadway is a great dive.  and my fave, the cherrybomb, on first ave, a bit north of downtown.  the ultimate unknown dive bar.

i don't know what kind of scene you're into, but i'd say definitely check out the PB area/garnet ave strip at night.  always going off.  typhoon saloon, the tavern, pb bar & grill...but get there before 9 or else you're in a freakin' line for awhile.

sorry that this is mostly bar info, but that's my industry so it's hard to change my thinking.  hope it helps...
