Title: Mine runs rough when cold and on choke
Post by: zirconx on April 01, 2011, 07:13:14 PM
My 2005 runs rough when its warming up. I don't remember this happening when I owned a '96 years ago. Is this normal?

Here is a video of it running when cold, it had been running for about a minute before I started recording this video.

Mine (2000) does that too when it's cold. It clears up after two or three minutes...long enough to get all my gear on.

Its nothing really bad, but this should not be happening.
I think this is problems with carbs..

So it's bloody cold and you like to run it without the choke and wonder why it runs rough. And when it revs higher you turn it down so it will keep running rough.

Do this...

- put the choke on FULL
- Start the bike
- if it doesn't rev up near 3k, use the throttle to give it a hand
- once it is up there near 3k, leave it revving like that for a minute

I'd say your idle is set high...

Should be 1500rpm max when fully hot, ~1100is what it'll normally idle at at the first point when it'll run without choke - when fully cold it shouldn't even run without choke. What does yours idle at when it's hot?

Follow the advice above!

My choke was on, so it wasn't idleing at the normal idle setting. The choke was probably on about half, until I turned it down to 1/4 part way through the video. I thought it was bad to have the engine racing 4-6k when cold, so I didn't have the choke on full.  :dunno_black:

Its difficult to have it idle around 3k as mister said. It either wants to go at 4-6k (full choke) or stumble around 1.5-2.5 at less than full choke.  I can get it to run at 3k, by playing with the choke quite a bit, but it doesn't stay at 3k for long, it will take off and shoot up to 4-6k pretty quickly. Then I turn the choke down and its stumbling around 1.5-2.5. Just doesn't seem very smooth like my '96 was.

Put the choke on full - not half or three quarters or anything else. Full.

I mentioned 3k cause that's what it did in the video.

Start on full choke; let it rev whatever it goes to for a minute; then adjust it down slightly - if it won't sit idling around 2k adjust to around 3k. Revving higher than 3k for a minute will not hurt the bike as there is no load.

Your 96 had a 2 circuit carb your 05 has a three circuit carb. Your 96 might have been jetted different from the Previous Owner. Choke cable might need lubing. Everything will be alright once we pass the equinox and head to the solstice. YOu forgot to plug the magic back into it - you do know where the magic plugs in don't you? And worst off all, you probably used powdered milk and not full cream  :thumb:
