picked up my first bike about a month back, and have already started transforming her into how i imagine
figured i'd start a build thread now rather than forget to later
sorry for the terrible cell phone photos, waiting to get her washed up and out in the sun before i get some better shots
first thing i wanted to do was remove the fairings
before
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/IMG_20110404_151141.jpg)
after
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/IMG_20110404_160825.jpg)
definitely was set on going duals, but felt the dominators left the front end lacking something. stumbled onto a thread about aztec8, saw their 5-3/4" duals and was sold:
clip on's installed:
to do:
-install .9 sonic springs and new fork oil
-get out seized bolts!!!! then wrap and install jardine exhaust
-mount chin fairing
-mount and install new bt-003's on white rims
-install new 15t front sprocket
-install reloads fork brace
-install rearsets
-install new levers
thanks for looking, feel free to ask any questions!
Are those mirrors weighted? I want to put some bar-end mirrors on my bike, but I'm not willing to put up with massive handlebar vibrations.
they're not the cheaper light weight ones, but no i don't believe they're weighted
only got one bar weight when i bought it, so i figured save cash and get bar end mirrors. honestly didn't think about vibration/harshness.
i drove it for almost an hour after adjusting the headlight. didn't notice any but it was below 40, overcast, and windy. so i was probably shaking worse than anything
i will say i enjoyed driving it much more with the fairings off :thumb:
comment/critiques are always welcome!
comment: headlights look great
critique: needs a bath
Wow, those headlights do look good. Clip-ons next IMO!

been tossing the idea around, but i'm not sure if i'd like 'em just for the comfort factor
Looks good. Would look better without the safety stickers on the tank and swingarm.
:icon_eek: never noticed them haha will be removing asap! preciate it
Id say while you are at it remove the reflectors and the extra 6 inches of fender.
WHy is everyone removing their fairings and riding their bike naked?
I understand it's personal choice, but WOW it seems like more of a fad now to shed your plastic.
Its hard to speak for others, but I know I wouldn't have bought this bike with fairings. To me, naked looks better by alot; I like to see the guts.
Also, given that alot of people on here do their own wrenching, a naked bike makes everything easier to get at.
Well I must be in the minority, but that's OK. I love the looks of this bike with the fairings.
Just as an FYI if any of you all that don't want your fairings I will take them just incase I mess mine up.
PM me and maybe we can make a deal.

I agree - I'm putting fairings on to an "E"
fenderectomy will definitely be coming soon, got to get a dremel or make it back to the parents
haha i could see riding no plastics becoming the hot thing, but naked bikes have always been my preference. since it's my first bike, being able to put frame sliders on w/o having to drill in the fairings is plus as well
i've been thinking if want to sell the fairings or not, and the more i get into this bike the more i want to overhaul it and make it mine forever haha so i might sell em to aid the flow of parts, i'll let ya know
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/securedownload.jpg)
stoked! :thumb:
I'll never understand why some guys take an F and make it naked, while the E guys add fairings and windscreens. We should set up some kind of exchange program...
The big reason is the front fairings stick out wider than the rear looks kinda funky. I kept the fairings but added a wider rear to make it a little better.

after riding for these first few months, i've decided i don't want to outgrow this bike, ever!
its ridiculous the enjoyment i get from it. i have no need for more power when i'm on two wheels.
so i've decided to swap my subaru for the power, and keep the gs til the wheels fall off.
so my plans are - finish painting my new passenger seat cover and chin spoiler, installing my jardine exhaust, getting the carbs cleaned and rejetted. then i'll be moving onto getting clip ons(euro style or 89's) and rearsets. after i get all that bolted on, i'll be moving on to suspension- new rear shock, and a gsxr front end is my dream, but will settle for a more tuned spring/oil setup.
comments/criticism/critiques are always welcome!!
I like my Flick dressed thank you very much!
BTW on the reflector bit I don't know about other states Florida requires them! I did the button ones on the tag on Flick but yes please look into local laws regarding that.
Mary
Did you get a chance to get anything painted and installed? I really like the look of the bike with the big duals and want to see this project moving in the right direction, via pictures of course.
nice to know someone's interested in the project
working on getting the chin fairing fitted before i move to paint. the gimbel fairing was made for pre 04's, so i'm going to need to trim quite a bit to get it snug around oil cooler.
still not 100% sure what color scheme i want to go with.. will either be blue with gold rims(my subaru love hates to be ignored haha) but i've been growing fond of the blue with white rims(similar to psyber's build) (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=44878.msg591501#msg591501)
as for parts: got my pipe in yesterday, and will be wrapping it in black wrap before it gets installed. buddah jet kit will be ordered later today. also got a set of 89 clip ons in route, they'll need some cleanin and paint before installation
here's a couple mock-up photos with my mate holding the parts on for me hahah
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/IMG_1032.jpg)
the more i look at this photo, the more i like the look of the chin fairing sitting angled instead being level with the ground. i've looked at it a bit closer, and there's no way i would have enough road clearance :icon_sad:
let me know what you think!
and if anyone could photochop either/both photos so all my plastics(chin fairing, passenger seat cover, and tail fairings) and my tank are a solid blue(same blue that's on the tank) it would be GREATLY appreciated!
got a couple photochops(big thanks to hrdy from customfighters!!)
got my top 3 main colors, just need to decide on accent colors/decals(if any)
i thought i'd like the green more(blasphemous i know haha) but now i'm debating between the blue and red. i don't really want a bright red bike, but i think it fits really well with the black frame
going to work on it some more today, opinions welcome!
I like the red!
I'd color match the tail and chin spoiler to the tank that's on it already. I like that blue.
Steezin - The part that I think could be better in your naked-i-zation is the headlight carrier.
Sadly I dont have an answer for you, but I do have a cool solution for a katana fork and a GS headlight. I had to make it for my MZ which has 41mm's so I made a few more.
Cool.
Buddha.
was wondering where you got your rear seat cowl from. did you make it yourself or bought it from somewhere?
loving the red, but pretty sure she'll end up blue with some sort of decal/paint scheme. aiming to make it similar to a factory suzuki style
@ buddha - i agree 100%. unfortunately all my play cash is tied up in parts and paint right now, but i have been putting bit of time into researching. i don't want to lose the duals, so i've been looking at different combinations of headlight brackets and maybe a small screen :dunno_black:
@wuzza - cowl is from cowltech, i really wouldn't suggest it. its not the best fit, but i think it will be OK after some tweaking and paint.
just ordered last of the parts needed to get everything test fitted then she'll be off to paint.
will be breaking her down this week and start building her back up.
i'm still stuck on getting the naked front end to tie together better, any ideas would be greatly appreciated

 not to be an A-hole, but i would prefer it we kept this thread on my project build. feel free to pm mach1 about his project :thumb:
'preciate it!
got the 89 triple and clips installed. fitted with new woodcraft bars, black levers, progrips, and sv throttle tube. need to figure out a new spacer for my mirrors as the woodcraft interior diameter is too small for my original bar end mirror spacers.
this is just the test fit, they'll be coming off and getting powder coated either dark grey or black
leaving the tail plastics off for now until i get suspension, exhaust(with a carb cleanin), and my other body parts installed

really enjoying the new setup. no tank slapping, but i will pinch a thumb on tight U turns if i'm not watching. flicking to WOT is much nicer with the sv tube and angle of the bars. driving the twisties feels unbelievably better, but i need to get adjusted to them when cruising still
Looks really good! :bstar: :bstar: :bstar:

not any updates, but i did order a few new things; got a teknic leather jacket off craigslist for $45, a new seat to permanently mount my passenger seat cover to(thanks adidas!), new front and passenger pegs, and am hunting for a plain black tank pad/protector
i did sell all my fairings and headlight on ebay for an awesome price. i've decided to bite the bullet and get some fresh paint! will hopefully be able to get the parts down to him within the next couple weeks :woohoo:
just a few updates:
2 of 4 ehaust header bolts are seized pretty good  :technical: - hopefully some heat/cool cycles, pb blaster, and torque wrenchin will break em loose. i'd hate to have to heli coil it out..
paint man's busy for a few weeks, so it looks like i'll be ordering the next round of parts instead of waiting haha
just got a dark smoked lens for my helmet, and a new tank bag. will be getting new tires and hopefully a set of white rims here soon
its slowly coming together. i need to stop taking weekend trips and spend some time putting what i got on
Good luck with those bolts. I'd say take your time and don't get in a hurry. Need more pic's! ;)
no real changes on the bike, but here's a photo of the new lens and tank bag
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/2011-08-10_15-18-29_977.jpg)
really loving the bag, no more need for a pack on small commutes
just ordered a smoked integrated taillight and tank pad!
i'm on a buying spree haha ordered my new bt-003's last night. and if all checks out, i'll be bringing a parts bike home after work!
So.... you gonna be the East Coast parts whore?
Nice to have fellow parts whores!

FOR SURE! my shed is begging to get a bike cave overhaul! haha
brought the '94 parts bike (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=57318.0) home today!
i was definitely driving home with a moto in my trailer (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/2011-08-11_20-00-14_757.jpg) after seeing this:
few more parts purchased:
-14t and 15t front sprockets
-buddha cover
-reloads fork brace
-gs500 chain guard
took a break from the parts bike and got my newly acquired fox racing shock installed. feels nice, compression knob works wells. will be doing to R&D on finding the perfect setup
photos of install

got pretty much everything stripped from the 94 parks bike, and was able to dedicate some time to the 04.
-got integrated taillight installed, but i ran out of terminal/connectors. so some connections need to be redone
-fenderectomy, but need to finished plate mounting setup
-passenger seat cover mocked up, still need to pull/staple seat leather
-buddha cover
-gsxr pegs, still need to finished the passenger pegs
a couple photos:

the gs gets pulled further into the basement until i get the shop reorganized haha
i have tomorrow off so stay tuned!
so glad my money went towards upgrading another bike. haha. thats awesome. looks sweeeeet:) keep postin pics!
not much progress on the bike, have been busy getting the shop cleaned and organized. got a few photos while i was out the other day tho

Looks like your making good progress! Tail light looks really good!
^ Thanks man!
starting to make up my mind on paint! i'm the worst at making decisions when i have such a wide range of choices
i found a ~2002 for sale across the pond with almost the exact scheme i've been picturing. only differences is mine will have; an oil cooler of course, dual headlights w/no screen, white wheels, jardine will get black exhaust wrap, and i'm thinking the full suzuki decal w/ no stripe on tank. haven't made up my mind on the tail fairing decals yet. these photos are really spurring me to get the bike in the paint booth.
dream scheme:
quick chop w/o decals:
also found a photo of an pre96(?when did they swap black engine for the silvers?) with 04 fairings. i actually really like the look of the fairings with white wheels:
naked 05 with no tail decals, it looks a bit plain, but i think with white wheels and a painted rear hugger it'll pull everything together:
check back for more progress, and hopefully a photochop of the scheme 90% complete
found a 1 pc tecknic leather suit for $125 on craigslist! my teknic jacket(size 40) was a bit too tight, the suit(size 44) may be hair tall for me, but fits tight and feels snug.
no progress, i've been working with the non running 2006 gsF i picked up
i did get a monster hugger like in cosmiccharlie's build and also found a used hugger that fellow gstwinner 'airbrush' made.
i think i've ran out less expensive mods to get haha. big things left on the list are rear sets, better levers, paint/powder coat
haha it looks like this summer project's dragged into my winter project :2guns:
finished the 06 part out, got some time to pull the forks, but still not luck getting the seized header bolts out
will be swapping in the sonic springs and new oil, putting the fork brace on, and hopefully getting those damned bolts out and swapping the exhaust. might end up taking her to the shop for some bolt removal..
Very inspirational thread. My daughter has similar aspirations for her 07F in the spring so we'll continue watching with great interest. Awesome job.
which of these headlight kits is the one you installed? I think I am going to order some too
edit: this looks like them. how hard were they to install? any issues or wiring changes necessary?
http://www.aztec8.com/catalog/i40.html
more parts binging.. the 'to get' list is lighter, but also is my wallet haha:
-LSL levers
-Gimbel Rearsets
also ordered all the shims to build my shim kit, will post that when its all organized

yep that's them! not hard to install at all. i don't touch much electronics, but the roommate is a genius. so i jumped in both feet, installation went smooth as butter. didn't need any help at all, also it comes with a pigtail to make installation even easier
thank ninja steve for getting me back on Aztec8's site! i found they have started producing a small windscreen for the 5-3/4" duals!
can't decide if i like it or not yet haha will probably buy one since its the only thing i've found to help my nakedization.. here's some photos of it mounted:

I would trade you my white rims for your black ones. I also looked at the duel lights, but had to go with the jardine exhaust, kn, and net kit. I might still get them sometime. Like the bike, with plastic on or of I could go either way, both look good. I like the gsxr tail with plastic. And naked like mine. Did you get the wind shield for those lights?
preciate the offer, but i already have a set of white rims from my 94 parts bike. willing to sell mine if yer interested
and windscreen was ordered today
How much ya want? I'm looking at doing the r shock in mine. How much was the fox shock?
pm'd ya
serious update to project;
bought a title-less 2006 gs500f with, get this.. 127 miles on it! for dirt cheap. i will be looking into getting it titled. if i cant i will be taking on my full winter project of swaping all the low mileage new parts onto the 04 frame(~19k miles) then build the no titled frame for a track bike.
will update soon
wind screen, LSL levers, and hugger came in! don't have forks on Chi Chi so i'll have to wait before posting a mock up photos. Gimbel rear sets should be here in a week or two!!
getting closer to titling the new 06 parts bike, if that happens i'll be selling this 04. Thinking of putting all the black tank and plastics from the 06 on her and selling it as a complete.
gimbel rear sets are on!! in!! man are these things gorgeous. (edit typo - i wish they were already "on" haha)
photo's of the newest pieces:

even though i'm not sure what bike i'll end keeping(04 or 06 parts bike), it hasn't stopped me from continuing to throw cash at more and more parts haha
just picked up a 2000 cbr f4 nissin caliper and sv650 adapter plate for under 100 shipped total! now that opens a new door of rotors, pads, SS lines, etc.... will it ever end?? haha hope not!
My wife would kill me if I rolled my motorcycle into our house. Especially on carpet!
Is that your Jeep or the room mate's? If so it's just one more thing we'll have to do, once I get my front axle back in, that is. ha
German engineering is sexy :icon_lol:
no wifey here, the gf is still new so she's got no power to tell me where to keep my toys.. yet :embarassed: and downstairs is where we get gnarly so no worries about moto parts ending up further and further away from the shop haha. actually still have my forks and new rubber sitting in the laundry room still, and tons of shred gear scattered throughout down there
nah i wish! that's my mate's 86 cj7, she's been in his family since brand new. he's had it since he was 16, pretty much spaghetti'd the thing trying to out pull his friend(another jeep) back in high school hahaha just got it up and running well couple years back
back OT - i've fallen in love with gimbel
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/IMG_2101.jpg)

got more today
brake adapter
and bar ends and shark fin from adidasguy
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/steezin_and_wheezin/IMG_2103.jpg)
Still tossing around which rear shock I want to use(fox vs r6.) So I picked up a practically brand new 2011 R6 shock to mess around with.
(seller's photo)

Also been fussing about the airbox more and more now that i'm trouble shooting the parts bike. Will probably snatch a lunchbox soon as well.
Can't wait to figure out which bike i'll be keeping and start putting on some of these parts
edit: also got my new SS lines. i think they look killer
warning!! cell phone photo.. haha

Well its been a fun road. The 2004 I dubbed Chi Chi served me very well. I sold her to an old friend today, he's never ridden and it eager to learn. We'll be riding and wrenching a lot in the future. Definitely will show him this site as well!
We put her back together tonight, and let him learn in the parking lot I learned in. I was like deja vu! Haha hit picked it right up and ended up having the confidence to drive her back to my house. We'll be putting all the black 2006 fairings and tank on tomorrow. I'll be leaving the tail light, fox shock, and maybe the 89 clips. All the other parts will be going on my 2006 parts bike, pending on getting her titled.

Did you put the new duel headlights on, if so how do you like them?
What is a gimble set for? What ever it is it looks sweet. Also what is the shark fin for? It also looks sweet.
@ knowles - I have had the headlights on for a few thousand miles before i sold the '04. They lights are great, great visibility, and they look awesome i think. Haven't had the chance to ride with the windscreen on them yet though
@ adrenaline - they are gimbel rearsets and the shark fin is a toe chain guard. it goes on the bottom of the swing arm. here's a photo of adidasguy's gs, Junior, with the gimbel sets and shark fin.

my frame and fin is black, i'm debating on powder coating the gimbels black to match
I see it in the picture and it looks like its to change the position of the rear brake and shifter. Is that what the gimbel is for? Is this to be more comfortable?
Sorry wasn't sure what you were asking. Gimbel is actually the manufacturer of these rear sets. These are more race designed, and they move your foot position from stock peg location to roughly 4" back and 2" up. Giving you a much more aggressive and race like body position.
Comfort is personal preference, but I feel more comfortable leaned over with clip on bars/race rear sets as opposed to the stock bars/rear sets
Ahhh Ic, thank you very much for the explanation.
