Title: New rider with a new bike in VA.
Post by: Roxtar on April 21, 2011, 07:09:25 AM
Hi everyone. I just bought a brand new 2009 gs500f as my first bike a month ago. only paid $2745 for it (cheaper than the used one at another dealer). I'm new to riding, so I'm sticking close to home until I get better at it. Already figured out that I need to work on my leg strength (i'm tall and scrawny) since i've already let it fall over a couple of times (replacement clutch lever and some frame sliders on the way).

I'm used to doing all my own wrenching on my cars, so i'm sure I'll have questions when it comes to working on the bike.

My current car project is a 1988 Porsche 944.

the plate stands for Das Porsche, which is german for "The Porsche". It's also a reference to the book/movie "Das Boot"

I'm not in VA, but my buddy is. He just moved down there from work, used to live in Damascus. I'm not sure where he lives, but I've been bugging him to get on these boards. His name is Joe. He'll make #4

Ok, registration just went through, so howdy.  I've been perusing the forum the past couple months while I got more comfortable with my '05 GS500F which I got end of May, I'm down in Woodbridge and I can vouch for 2 different GSF's that I've passed out on i-95 on my way into DC.

Also Roxtar, since you paid what I just paid for mine which is about 4 years older and used (definitely dropped a couple times) I must learn your secrets for next time.

Suzuki was offering $1k off of select bikes at the beginning of the season and I was originally looking at coleman powersports there in woodbridge, but they sold out before I finished the MSF class. I searched for gs500fs on cycle trader and other sites and found that Romney Cycle Center in Romney WV had a few of them listed for just under $2700 which included the discount. I called them up and told them to hold onto a blue one for me and I'd be over to pick it up that weekend. $2745 out the door.

I know I saw somebody local on a GS500F on Easter Sunday around 1:00-1:30. It was on 66 east between Manassas and Fairfax. It was blue, but I'm not sure of the year. Definitely different graphics than on my 09.

More Virginians reporting in.

I'm in Newport News with my '09, and my coworker just bought an '07 a few months ago. Both are the black color scheme, and we somehow also ended up having the same helmet and jacket by chance -- so we totally look cool riding around as doppelgangers.  :tongue2:

Would love to see some more GS's around here!

the plate stands for Das Porsche, which is german for "The Porsche". It's also a reference to the book/movie "Das Boot"

Not to get all grammar police on you, but the make of a car is always masculine in German, so it should be Der Porsche (or Der Volkswagen, etc). Generically, though, Das Auto would be correct.  :whisper:

But, great looking bike & welcome!

yours is in much better shape than mine (either of them... i have an 86 that's my "parts car"). I definitely like the Fuchs.
Looking to maybe sell the '44s soon though and get something else (maybe a 964)

Besides being close for my lazy ass, The parkway is always a good ride. Charlottesville is pretty central and about 20 minutes from the parkway or Harrisonburg is closer for those on I-81 and very close to the parkway.

Sounds good, I'm a little too far southwest(~3 hrs one way to y'all over in more central VA) to catch a day ride.. My girlfriends family is in Marshall/Manassas area, maybe I'll trailer the bike up sometime to get a ride in with y'all.

If you ever make it down towards SW VA, I'm sure we can get a few gs' together for a ride as well!

I'll definitely be riding down through Harrisonburg sometime this summer on my way to a place where I camp.

Once temps start getting up into the 70/80s I'd say definitely check this thread out and we can get together or something.

Hey all,

Figured I would *bump* this and add in, new owner of a 07 GS500F.  Also new on this form.  Had my license since Sept 2013.  Look forward to this snow going away and getting out there to ride.  Supposedly it's going to be 61 next Monday and 68 on Tues but with rain :(.  Hopefully clears up after that.

Look to riding with you guys.

Welcome ryuk! Thanks for a much needed bump!!

Who's in VA trying to plan a trek this summer? A friend and I are going to ride down to Myrtle's bike week(may 16th weekend). Also have 2 treks planned to head north to Snowshoe mountain, WV

Old man winter doesn't want to let go this year, and I don't mind it! Gives us a few more days shredding on the mountain and has us chomping at the bit for some 2 wheeled riding!

I would love to try to get everyone from virginia together and do a ride through the blue ridge mountains before Winter hits. Skyline Drive or Blue Ridge Parkway or something. Let's brainstorm and figure out when would work for everyone or at least a few of us. I'd say we can meet up in the Waynesboro/Staunton Area and do one of those roads. Say early October??
