According to ebay, it's the wheel from a 97 Katana. According to dunlop, the rear rim on the 89-97 Katana 600 is 3.5 inches wide. Only the newer 98-06 Katana 600s have the desirable 4.5 inch rear rim.

Short version: No improvement over stock.

Really appreciate that you're looking out though. Very seriously considering doing the katana wheel over my RGV250 swap, and would jump on this had it worked out.

I assumed it would be understood that it is a stock replacement and not a wider wheel. The wider Katana wheels do indeed start from 98+ as you pointed out. They have straight spokes unlike the pre 98 Kat wheels which have curved spokes like the GS500. :)

I've changed the topic to avoid any confusion.

Got it. Was confused. Stock GS wheels don't seem that hard to come by either. I take it that the earlier katana rim are the same basic part as the GS rim?

Or you can go the Bandit route with the 4.5" rim.

Bandit 400 is 4". The spoke pattern is identical to GS though.
Cool.

Much as I would love a matching spoke pattern, the front wheel is from a GSX-R 600. :)

If you don't care about spoke pattern then Bandit 600 rim from 95-99 is 4.5".

Yep. :)

I need to make the decision whether to proceed with my RGV swingarm swap, or to sell the parts and do the Katana wheel... Right now, it looks like I'll continue with the RGV swap. Overall weight savings appears to be pretty huge with this approach, on the order of 20lbs.
