so i was riding the other day and i got a good stretch of road ahead of me and i topped the bike out at about 110 or so....great feeling to be honest....really no need to go faster but im thinking better acceleration would be great...thought i wouldn't be saying this but i might have to get a different bike soon...i feel like im beating on my gs and im wondering whether a 600cc would really be that big a difference from our gs500
i think around 110 is about my top as well
a 600 is a completely different animal...
Huge difference! A cbr 600rr has like triple the power and can do triple digit speeds easily, crotch rocket, super smooth, awesome power.
I just recently purchase an 09 and had to choose between it and a SV650. AFter owning the GS for over a month now I am thinking I should have gotten the SV. On a side not though I don't need or want to go over 110mph although quicker acceleration would be nice, so I am going to start making moods to my GS like the normal upgrades: exhaust, rejet, air box and see where that leads me. Try it, it's less expensive then getting a new bike.
The GS500 and a sportbike like the CBR are very different beasts. Despite being bigger overall, modern 600s are much more cramped. They are going to have much better power on the top end, but not a lot more low down in the revs.
If you want a crotch rocket, go for it. I owned one, but eventually bought a beemer. It ended up collecting spiderwebs until I sold it.

I beg to differ. or just differ without begging. modern day ( and older too) 600s have a very noticeable low end power difference as well as high end. You say it like you jump on zx6 and start to take off thinking oh this isn't that much more power, when in reality,(fmoue at least) you feel the difference right away no matter what rpm you're at, and even more so if it's your first time riding a 4 banger or v twin 6+ in the sv's case.
I can get to around 200km/h going down hill but my speedo over reads a fair bit, so around about 177-180km/h
Faster than I can run, slower than a cop car, slower than a speeding bullet, faster down hill with a tail wind than uphill with a headwind, fast enough to throw you off on the twisties.
How much diff between the GS500 and any number of 600s? A lot. Not much at all. Depends on what you call "a lot" or "not much". So, go test ride some and make your own judgement. You Will notice a difference. How you rate that difference will be based on your own rating scale.
Naked SV650 has the closest riding position to the GS. Same with the GSX650
Test ride then come back here and put your ride information in the Test Ride thread - I hope to get two more up there in a couple of weeks. W800 & Honda 750 Shadow.

Why do people care about the GS's top speed? Take a good look at the bike. It is obvious she ain't gonna be breaking any land speed records :dunno_black:
Enjoy her for what she is ;)

I care quite a bit... But then again, I spend most of my time riding the GS with the throttle WFO (Wide Bleeping Open.)
i've never taken it past 85. i'm not out to kill myself. i prefer handling twisty mountain roads than just going fast.
The only time I had my 97 GS up to 110 mph was on a twisty mountain road. Don't think I've ever had my 02 GS over 80-85 mph.
I got Dumbo up to 115 mph on the speedo which is probably ~103-105 mph in reality, they read very high. It was going down hill and no cars in sight. Honestly that faster then I ever need to go on a public road, with metal guard rails and nothing surrounding me when the shazam hits the fan. I have no desire to rack up points or broken limbs. For that I love the GS, faster then most cars to highway speeds and gets me to where i need to go.
Hmmm... You guys has a slow gs's or i hawe a turbo gs? :icon_lol:
Once i had flew with my gs at almost full speed on my speedometer. It was about a 115+mph and near small 200kmh digits. No downhill or back wind just rough, narrow, dirty, and wet road. Even rejected speedometer high reads its impressive speed for little gs. Especially for a 1997 gs..
Im often riding at hight speeds like 90mph+ and do not see any bad things on engine due this so far.
Went a little of-topic :embarrassed:
I hit 130 once fairly level ground, don't know what the wind was doing but I know it was going 130 cause then I wouldn't have felt like I would turn into a parachute if I sat up
I'm pretty sure that with stock gearing you should be able to get 200km/h out of a GS, the original factory specs claim something like that anyway. I found myself on a straight stretch of freeway coming back from a road trip a few weeks ago and wound it out a bit, and as I passed 150 I realised that I was cold, bored and if I hit some debris I was a good chance of dying. Going fast on a straight stretch of freeway is a bit like going fast in an airliner. You know you're doing like 800km/h but somehow it's still really f%$king boring. And the food's awful.
80km/h round a 45km/h posted corner will get the heart pumping much faster.

Agreed. I got it out of my system once, thats enough. Same with my car.
I knew the top speed of my old bike well, but I haven't topped out the GS(at least in the past 5 years, I probably tried when I was younger but can't remember doing it) and I've never even tried to top out my XB. I've only had it over 90mph a few times.
There's definitely a jump in power, even low end. 600s rev high, but they'll still pull when you let the clutch out. After riding other bikes and getting back on the GS sometimes I think there's something wrong with the clutch before I realize I need to raise the RPMs by about 2000rpm for the bike to actually pull away. You get used to the power though, which is why the gs500 feel fast enough if it's all you ride. You'll be amazed the first time you ride a 600-1000 I4 sportbike and give it gas and feel like you're going to fall off the back of the bike because you don't really know what it means to have to hold onto the bike with your legs haha. I'll never forget that feeling.
I've done > 150 before. There's no way in hell the GS reached that speed without a serious tail wind.

I think we might be getting confused on the Mph/km/h thing.
Yes, we are. Totally my mistake.
I thought that the stock GS500 was drag limited to about 112 mph. I did an indicated 110 when I first got mine all fixed, then backed off. Never did it again. It's pretty rare for me to run it up over 85 mph now.
