Title: I am a GS virgin, please help me!!
Post by: klev7789 on April 26, 2011, 05:48:10 PM
I have a huge problem. I own a 2004 gs500f, and have had it for about 2 months now. Yesterday while cruising, it just started making this loud clack clack clack noise, so I pulled the clutch and was on the side of the road within seconds.  Upon further inspection, when starting the engine, it makes the clacking noise even in neutral. I didnt want to chance revving it, but I'm pretty sure that as I was downshifting, the clacking increased with RPM.  Do any of you GS seasoned veterans out here have any idea what would have caused this?  The drivetrain didnt lock up, shifted through the gears just fine upon pulling over. I pulled the clutch cover off and everything there looks fine. When rotating the engine manually in gear, it turns the back wheel.  I'm lost :(

Please help.

Kyle

First of all check the oil. Put the bike on the centre stand - Unscrew the dipstick - Wipe it - Insert it back in without screwing it back into the thread, pull it out and see if you have oil.

Secondly was the clacking noise happening when you were pulling up to a stop? If so it could be cam end play noise which a few GS's (including mine) suffer from. Mine does it on really hot days and a quick rev gets rid of it. It is not terminal for your bike so I am told.

it turned out to be the cam chain tensioner. revving it up got it to reset and it's been fine since thank god.

well not reset as if i pressed a reset button, revving it up put tension to the chain again, and unstuck the tensioner. that makes a little more sense.
