So,
I bought my 2006 GS500F about a month ago. Great bike! I have been riding dirt my whole life so, I'm a little new to the somewhat street bike scene/ GS500 scene. But, I have completed some mods to my bike and the next one I want to tackle is the Exhaust. Is there anything I can do to the stock exhaust to make it have a meaner louder sound, or am I going to have to drop some cash on an aftermarket exhaust?
You can drill the back end of the can inside the crown (but outside the stinger), and may or may not have to rejet.
I heard some people did some drilling to the factory one but never seen details of it. I bought a Danmoto muffler($125 shipped I think) and I like the way it sounds.....nice rumble at idle and a lil louder then factory at the higher rpms but not enough to bother the rider. Just remember if you do an aftermarket it is highly recommended to do a rejet

What bike did you purchase from? They dont manufacture any for the GS500 directly.
Sounds good, This may be a stupid question but, what does a rejet entail? and how hard would it be fore me to do myself?
I bought one for a 06 bandit 650/1250.......you would need to get a pipe made to mount it in stock location, I didn't want to so I mounted mine under the bike. Way cheaper then buying one made for the gs.
Go to www.gstwins.com and look in the how to section for showing how to do the rejet, its not to bad but getting some of the screws loose can be a pain.....I had to drill out 7 of 10 but was able to do it with no damage

Junior came with that - someone drilled 3 holes in the end. It did make it louder, but not deep and throaty. Loud, high and tinny sounding. Don't drill holes (though you can plug them up with a screw when you realize it isn't what you wanted.) replaced with a V&H system and tossed the drilled can. Pipes went to another bike for a slip-on. (We're really in to swapping and re-using parts!)
You can find used systems or a slip on for pretty low prices. Got a used full Jardine system for $125 on flea-bee. Our West Seattle Group has quite an assortment on our bikes: Vance & Hines, stock, Sito, Jardine, Yoshi, carbon fiber something, and others. All sound different. All sound good. Some louder than others. Some deeper than others. Its all in what you want. Find other GS500 owners in your area and see what they have done. Check out GS500's on YouTube where people show off their exhaust systems and hear the difference.
