Title: Parts needed to fix leaky fork seals
Post by: irishman72 on May 02, 2011, 03:12:49 PM
I just this weekend bought a 92 GS500. My first bike in 20 years, and I am looking forward to riding the hell out of it.

But first I need to replace the fork seals (along with the brake pads the oil has ruined). I've read a ton of posts on how to do it, but I'm looking at the fiche scan on bikebandit and wondering what exactly I need to buy. Guessing items 5, 6 and 7 but I'm not sure. Am I missing any?

Found this on eBay, but do I need an additional o-ring?

Thanks.

Matt

Buy the parts from that ebay site. That is all you need, unless your fork cap o rings are bad, then visit a local hydraulic or equipment shop for those. The clover leaf clips should be OK.If they are rusty, clean them with some sand paper and reinstall.

Handy posting. I noticed this weekend that one of Junior's forks has a very slight leak. So I ordered sets for him and Trey. Trey really has nothing for front suspension - weight of bike alone  makes the front drop a couple inches. So I've got new springs, oil and might as well replace the seals at the same time. I wonder if there even is any oil in Trey's forks? Touch the front and it moves down! Like nothing there. Oh, well, replace everything at once and be done with it for a few years. That's the best way to do it. I'll order new springs for Junior and give him a complete front end make-over, too.

Aaah, that's a spring clip in the picture. Couldn't tell by the funky scan and incomplete description. Thanks, Ben. Thanks, too, for the info.

You may want to look at heavier fork oil
you also need to look for little nicks where stones have been flicked into the fork tubes and use really fine sandpaper or scotchbrite to polish them out
There are other threads on this topic that are worth a look as well
Have fun
