Just separated the military, gas is SKY HIGH, and i'm back to school so i need something to carry excess books, or whatever I need. Are there any recommended tail bags from experienced riders who have used them? Thanks.
why not aim for a nice backpack. most riders i see use a backpack VS getting a saddle bag or a rear shelf.

2nd. Plus if you just separated you might be used to it if you had to carry a rucksack.
I usually bring my gym bag with me to (and from) work and I just sling that over (so the strap is accross my chest & back) and have it so it just barely sits on the passenger seat - that way if I need to adjust it I just lean forward (lifts it off the seat) and move it with my right hand.
I prefer to ride with a tailbag versus my backpack, on account of the fact that I don't want awkward things attached to me in the event of a crash. That said, I do ride with both. My tailbag is the Cortech Sport Tailbag, which I chose because it integrated with my saddlebags.

I second that too. For this reason I do not wear backpacks when I ride - just my back protector at most, and nothing else.
May I suggest a couple options:
1. Get a bungee net and use it to tie a rucksack, backpack etc. down to the pillion seat. There are 4 pegs on the rails under the rear plastics for this purpose as stock.
2. Why not get a tankbag? There are tons of them on the market. You put your books and stuff in there, attach it to the fuel tank (a safety cord is usually provided too), and you're good to go. I have one where the part with the magnets and cord can be detached from the actual bag and stays on the bike, and the bag itself becomes a rucksack. Worth considering IMHO.

Yup, that's the bag I use, and that's how it mounts when it's used without the saddlebags.
i also have the cortech sport tail bag and like it. i usually use my backpack though.
