Title: Metric Feeler Gauge Set Group Buy CANCELLED
Post by: ben2go on May 05, 2011, 01:23:23 PM
I just contacted a company that sets up custom sized tapered feeler gauge sets.I have request a price on individual feeler gauges with a plastic holder. The sizes I requested in the sets are 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05, 0.07, 0.08, 0.09, 0.1, 0.15. 0.2. 0.25, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0.The blades size is 4.4 inches long and 1/2 inch wide.I need 20 prepaid orders. Each set will be $14 and that includes shipping from me to you when the order arrives.I need this order posted by May 13,2011.I take paypal or money orders.PM me for payment details.I am told that the sets will be delivered in 2 to 4 weeks.I will send them out in the order I receive payments.Since I haven't been working much,I'll probably send all of them out the next day after I receive the order. The company is verified by paypal and the BBB.This is a bulk tool supply company,so I feel that they are worthy of a group buy.

Find a decent engineering shop and buy an offcut of shimsteel from them in the size you want, then cut it to fit. Far easier and far more accurate than cheap feelers.

Ask them nicely and they might even give you it for nothing   :thumb:

If you are looking to make a  profit buy 2 rolls, one sized for the inlet one sized for the outlet and sell it off in 6" lengths.

I'm going to retract my offer to participate.  I just found a set in a local shop for eight bucks.   Sorry, Ben2go.

The one on ebay is a cool find for $8, the one at harbor freight isn't really worth the money as far as a GS500 is concerned. I've only ever been able to find feelers as thin as .038mm, which is a pain when the GS valve clearance can go down to .03.

Running clearances under .04 is cutting it real close to the limit anyway... so close that if you rev it up a lot or put anything over just casual weekend miles, you'd have to tear it all apart too soon.... :)
I know folks have a lotta different preferences when it comes to stuff like valve clearances and such.... i just prefer to run my valves on the loose/high clearance/safe side... especially on motors like the air cooled GS500. Higher clearances let the valves cool down a tiny bit longer due to increased seat time and also results in longer service intervals.

I definitely wouldn't want my valve clearance to be right around .03, but if you want to adjust them properly to the right gap, you've gotta know what your current gap is to know what size shims you need. My bike had clearances less than .038, but still enough of a gap that the buckets would spin freely and I had no way to know where they were between .00001 and .037. If you're just gonna go up .05 anyway it's all the same, but still.

i actually bought of those a couple months ago for 6$ shipped. if you're patient it'll probably come around again...if you're not in a hurry that is.

amazing how little it costs to ship something like that half way across the world but none of my local shops had anything close  :dunno_black:
