Title: Incident w/ Pic, wondering if fork is okay...
Post by: Pelikan on May 07, 2011, 02:55:53 PM
Was coming around a bend yesterday where they had just been doing road work.  Sand, tar, asphalt and gravel all over the road.  Slid out at fairly low speed.  Goobered my fairings, myself, and the pictured bolt on the fork.  Wondering if that bolt is okay or if I need to do something to it.

The bolt is really a stud with threads.

What clamps together or tightens down is called a castle nut and what locks it in place is a cotter pin.

From looking at the pic, just the end of the stud seems to be scraped up a bit. The cotter pin is still in place which means the castle nut did not come undone or loose.

The only thing you may have trouble with is loosen the castle nut up or taking it off if the threads are messed up.

Can't see clearly but, the only thing I would do is replace the cotter pin. I don't see both leg/tabs bent over.

Are you OK?

Where do I get the cotter pin?  Bike bandit I guess?

My knee was brush burned pretty bad (through my pants, inexplicably), and I broke my finger.  Otherwise okay.  Would have been in seriously sorry shape if I wasn't wearing all the gear.

Guess I'll be turning this one into a naked and putting the good plastics up for sale.

Cotter pin: they're all the same except for size. Any hardware store, car parts or bike parts place. Its just a common ordinary cotter pin.
Only need to replace it if its broke. all it does is keep the nut from spinning off.
Why does everyone think they always have to go to bike bandit? I have trouble with a place that has "bandit" in its name.

There's a good reason they have it in the name $$$.  I did buy my passenger helmet from there TBH but only cause it was pretty much a steal.
