Title: Buell xb12s healdight on gs500.
Post by: junk301 on May 09, 2011, 12:22:32 PM
Hey all,

My 500f has been in an accident recently, and the right and front fairings are toast.  instead of repairing it im thinking of converting my f to an e, but instead of those stock headlight, i want to install a different headlight.  I've considered the buell xb12s( 2003-current), the gladius, the er-6n and the fz8.  Does anybody have experience with installing other brand headlights on their gs, is this possible or is it just a lot of work on my hands. Let me know

Cheers

I don't know how much work, but I'm sure it would look good with the fly screen to go with it.

That's my bike. It has Dominator lights, which are easy to mount with the available mounting brackets. (I say "available" not "included"). Or you can use e-model headlight brackets with a little bending. The Buell lights would be more work with custom brackets.

You can see how I did the flyscreen here: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=47031.0

It might actually be easier to use the dominator lights, they look the same and have normal mounts. The Buell headlights have brackets that bolt right to the top and bottom triple and the headlights and flyscreen attach to it. You could make it work on a GS, but either way would work. As far as the Buell headlights, there's 4 wires, black, white, orange and yellow. I don't remember how the GS headlight wires up. Let me know if you need detailed pictures of any of it, I think I know somewhere I can get a few...  :thumb:

+1 for some up close shots.  Nice work man.  How much do those flyscreens run?

The flyscreens only cost $75 new, so I usually see them going anywhere from $30-50. I did but one of the transparent red ones for $10 once.

of course you are, now that I took a bunch of pictures! :tongue2:

I think that other headlight would fit, but it would look huge on a GS.

Anyway, here's some just for a close up...

Headlights are 4" each with half an inch between them...

Mounts with 2 bolts on each side...

Flyscreen removed...

Bolt holes for the flyscreen....

Held on by 2 mounts on the top, shouldn't be that hard to come up with a way to mount them, you can also see the plug with the black/white/orange/yellow wires. Also, you can see that the actual bracket that holds the headlights and the flyscreen is one piece and you don't have to have those outside pieces to use it if you find a way to mount it...

The angle is held by a bracket on the bottom that lets the headlight swing back and forth on the top mounts....

This is also a good link to to someone who swapped top triple clamps, but it lets you see how everything bolts up, especially since he's bolting it up to a triple clamp it's not made for...

I've been wanting to swap mine out just for a normal round headlight, one of the nice clear ones off the newer SV650. It's the only part of the bike I don't absolutely love. I don't mind them, they just don't really do it for me. The gauges are definitely a little big to completely strip down the front end though.

Hey,

Did you change the gauges as well because the headlight wouldn't fit otherwise or was it just for look.  Also how much did the gauge run you, looks sweet. :)

The gauges cost me $3200, which was a little steep but they gave me the rest of an xb9 to make up for it  :icon_mrgreen:

Don't think it would fit much easier than the Buell headlights.  And it's not legal for road use (at least in USA, and probably most developed countries) with just 25 watts.

Thanks TT for the pics.  Got me looking for a set of lights from an XB!

Ok, if you like the Buell dual set up (which probably has slightly better light output than the Dominators) do it like this: http://forum.svrider.com/showpost.php?p=975573&postcount=4

using the spacers is definitely a good idea, looks pretty clean. I wonder if he used the mount on the bottom to stabilize it or just tightened the top down enough to hold it. The headlight mounts on top are still just plastic so I'm always a little paranoid to break them. Too bad that kid kinda sounds like a duck, don't bother asking him questions, he's not I love YOU and doesn't want to hold your hand, haha. Someone didn't get enough love when he was a toddler.

Note: I didn't say "duck" haha

Note:  The headlights themselves used to be a $60 part from HD/Buell and is not well over $120.  Jut buy Dominators and be done.....

Y0421.1ADA - Headlight Assembly - $64.35 (NO LONGER THIS PRICE: $120+)
M0645.1ADA - Mount Headlight - $23.55 (this holds the flyscreen on)
M1600.1ACMW - Windscreen Kit w/decal (black) - $59.95 (you can get also order the colored one's too)
M0023.1AJAYT - Headlight Grille - $39.95

Even without the grill you are looking at $220 plus on the mod.

Also keep in mind that sometimes parts take a while to get. I just ordered a handlebar clamp from a dealership that likes Buells and it only took a few days to come in. Other people report waiting 2 months for parts. The down side is that you have to go into an HD dealership to order the stuff, and if you don't happen to go into one that actually liked the bikes they're going to be less than helpful. That's half the reason Buell never really did that well. HD agreed to supply parts for 7 years, but that doesn't mean they stock the parts. I think they wait until the orders pile high enough, and then they make that many parts and ship them, then go back to waiting. You'd do best just to keep an eye on buell forums and ebay until someone lists a whole headlight setup.
