Title: Finally found a tool that works for adjusting rear suspension
Post by: paalak on May 19, 2011, 02:49:17 PM
I bought my GS used and it didn't come with the took kit. The only tool from the kit I really needed was the spanner wrench for adjusting the rear suspension, so I didn't want to buy the whole kit. I tried using a crowbar, but mine was too big and wouldn't fit in the slots. Couldn't get good leverage with a file or a screwdriver. Then I saw a tack remover on the shelf at Ace Hardware and it immediately made me think of that rears suspension. It looked like a perfect fit, and the curved end looked great for leverage, like a crowbar but smaller. So I bought it and it worked. I bought the Great Neck tack remover, but any should work. They're cheap too, about $5. Here's a link with a pic:

I'll try to get some pics up, but it's super easy. You just stick the hooked part into the slot and give it a good crank. My suspension adjuster was jammed up, so I sprayed some Break Free in there and let it sit for a few hours, then it turned easily. I weigh 190 lbs, so I definitely prefer having the suspension set to 5 instead of 4.

Has anybody here tried just using a big pipe wrench?

I used Channel Lock pliers once, but it flexed the collar and I didn't want to do it again...they sell a generic adjuster tool at the Suzuki dealer here that attaches to your socket wrench...didn't buy one, so I don't know how well it would work...

Later.

The tool kit for our bikes comes with one.
Then if you no longer have the tool kit......  :nono:

Buy a tool kit from fleabay for $20 or so or just buy the tool. $10-20 depending on brand and quality. Here's one:

PS: Just looked it up. About $11 at your Suzuki dealer. Seems any bike shop would have one.

Spend more if you want, but the tack remover fits/works perfectly, and probably weighs less than the Suzuki tool, for a cool $5  :D
