Title: Quick fairing question
Post by: danny1121 on May 19, 2011, 09:10:55 PM
On my rear fairing, there is a minor crack, and I was going to use some epoxy to weld it together. Is the fairing plastic or fiberglass though? I want to make sure I use the correct epoxy, this is what I just got

I was planning on applying the epoxy to the backside of the fairing, but what would be the best way to do this?

It's not fibreglass, but that will work fine. Scuff the back of the plastic with 60 grit to promote adhesion and quick wipe with a degreaser. I assume you're backing the repair with 'glass?

Sorry, but what do you mean by "backing the repair with 'glass?"

Basically after you glue it back together you cover the patch in some fiberglass to make it more structurally sound.

That is a great idea. After work today I'll pick up some fiberglass and 60 grit. Do I use fuse the fiberglass to the inside of the fairing with the epoxy as well?

Not quite. The fiberglass will come with epoxy and resin, you'll mix the two and brush them on, then lay the fiberglass over that. Make sure you press out any air bubbles.

BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WITH EPOXY ON THE FAIRINGS.EPOXY UNDER GOES A CHEMICAL REACTION TO CURE AND THIS REACTION CAN CAUSE ENOUGH HEAT TO MELT THE FAIRINGS OR CAUSE A FLASH FIRE.READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY.FOLLOW ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN APPLYING OR HANDLING.

The fairings are made of ABS.

Thanks for the tip ben, I'll be sure to be extremely careful with this stuff :thumb:
Will the epoxy I got work on ABS?

I'm not 100% sure but most will.Just gotta make sure you clean the fairings, after sanding, with degreaser/wax remover before applying.
