Title: My '05 GS500F is dying out! Help!
Post by: mellen859 on May 19, 2011, 10:52:11 PM
I just bought this gs and it's a lot of fun to ride while it was ridding, if I let the bike sit for a while it will start to run until(my guess) it runs out of gas.. Of course I have gas in the tank but it seems like it's not getting it? I don't know much about bikes or anything mechanical really so I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions. I can tell from some rust on the bike that the previous owner let it sit and it wasn't taken care of, sadly. What would cause it to bog out and die? Another note is as soon as it dies the oil light comes on. I did a oil and oil filter change on it already. Sometimes when it's idling the oil light comes on or it flickers on and off but the moment I open up the throttle it goes off. Unfortunately I need to get to work in a few days so I need to fix this asap lol

As far as the gas running out, is it all the time or just when it's sitting at idle?

The oil light comes on when there is low pressure. So every time it stalls it should come on.

Thanks for the quick reply. &All the time, it seems fine at idle. I can rev it up to high rpms and let I've let it idle for 10 min, then I took it out and it died right up the street.

Edit* I don't know for sure if the gas is the problem but why else would it slowly die?

Could it be vacuum lock in the tank or carbs?

Sounds like the vacuum line may have come off the back of the frame petcock or carb. You should set your petcock on PRI(prime) position, until the engine starts up and runs, then switch the petcock to ON position. Also check the fuel level. The GS tank will not empty out and it will appear to have more fuel than it looks like.

This is possible.Opening the tank and listen for a suction sound.I have a thread in the FAQ on how to dismantle and clean the fuel cap to take care of a plugged tank vent.

Of course I have gas in the tank

Famous last words. How do you know you have Enough gas in the tank? By looking? If so, you're doing it wrong. Get thysaelf to a gas station and fill her up, then reset the trip meter. Looking in the tank lets you know you have gas but maybe not enough. ONLY the trip meter will let you know if you have sufficient gas.

So, first rule out Enough Gas and fill it up.
