Title: WTB: Suzuki GS500 parts
Post by: Flaming Chainsaws on May 23, 2011, 04:16:45 PM
Looking for a good running engine and electricals needed to make it run. I want to swap the GS500 engine into my 1980 GS450 frame.

Yes, I know what needs to be done... It would be cool if you;re in the Seattle area since shipping will be a lot.

Don't have an engine. But there are a bunch of us GS500'ers in West Seattle, U District, Edmonds, etc.
I think we'd love to see you do it!
Keep us posted on your progress.

Good to know! I'll post an ad on craigslist.

I want to do this swap because parts are more plentiful for the GS500. My GS450 electrical system has major issues such as constantly blowing the igniter so to hell with the GS450 engine and electricals. I have bought 4 igniters, cleaned/checked grounds, got a brand new R/R that works, brand new electrical connectors on the wiring harness... I don't know what else to do! I want a more modern, more reliable, and plentiful parts of the GS500.

This guy did it.

And this guy too!

Now imagine the GS500 engine on my bike...

So now you know why I'm looking for one. I like the old school look of my bike so I don't really want a new bike. If I can get the engine, carbs, and electricals... All I have to do is make the exhaust headers work.

Well, being a local Seattleite, should you happen to find a decent parts bike with the engine you want....
one of our group needs a good frame (with title preferably) as his is a little twisted. So we would be willing to go in with you for a parts bike and divide things up. We're keeping our eyes out, too. Parts bike makes a lot of sense now that we know of someone that wants the engine.

Cafe racer project is a neat idea.
I'm not that as old school cafe as you, but this is Junior - the favorite of my bikes - sort of in between style:

Sure thing! All I need is the engine and electricals. Don't need the frame, plastics, or anything else. And if you or someone you know finds a GS500 parts bike that won't be using the engine or electricals, you know who to contact :)

I remember I saw a red GS500 parts bike on craigslist for $250 a few months ago. Why did I not pick that up???

Well, good luck to both of us in our search.

By the way, awesome bike there!

FC, have you looked into stuffing a GR motor in there? It's a whole different project.......I don't even know if it's possible.

I do have an 18" snowflake up for sale if you want it.

Hey Big Rich. Didn't know you were here too.

A GR650 motor is pretty rare so I think I'll pass on that. Plus it's a little taller than a GS450/GS500 motor.

I'm wanting to do a modern front end conversion. In fact, I have a deal going on for a Katana 600 front and rear end over at The GS Resources. I think shipping will be expensive though...

I do ask myself if it's worth spending all this time and money on this 30 year old bike... But hey, when I finish, I'll feel good about it :)

Yeah, I followed the teachings of Buddha (his GR motor experience to be exact) and they haven't kicked me out yet!

I don't blame you for going after the 500- much easier to deal with. May want to look into the GR heads though. If it fits, it would save you the trouble of custom exhaust work. And the Mac 2-1 for the GS450 should bolt right up!

You will get used to it. :icon_mrgreen:

To limit thread hijacking and to not clutter up with more pictures:
go to my profile and click on "Website:  Pix of my bikes"   which is:  http://s1206.photobucket.com/home/adidasguy/index

That seat is a Gimbel cafe solo seat custom painted. The decals on it are actually tail decals from a 200"F tail that were in my parts box and seemed to look good there.

Same size as a regular GS500. Just looks smaller due to the seat. I'll have to check where I got the chain guard. Some place in Germany I think. Probably could find it with a google "gs500e chain guard" search. or "stainless chain guard". Somehow that's how I first found it.

PS: DO NOT FORGET--- parts bike still needed in Seattle or surrounding area. Looks like he will become part of the West Seattle GS500 club. Found he lives in our area!

Just re-read this. This is interesting.... If the GR650 heads fits on a GS500, then there will be no need to make an exhaust, which I haven't figured out yet. Anyone in the Seattle area handy with a welder? If not, I'll spend like $600 getting one custom made  :o

My bike looks small? I guess so. I think it's because the huge 19" front rim and the lack of a seat pad. Cafe's should be small anyways  ;). Well, according to my plans, I would call this a modern cafe or something... I don't know!

Anyways, still looking and am quite motivated to do this swap.

Yup. Saw that already. But I don't have a car to go pick it up. I already emailed him asking if he would ship or deliver at my expense. I'm gonna call him in a little bit...

I have a truck. Let me know. I am scheduled to head out of town from 6/5 to 6/18, and then again from 6/30 to 7/10. I don't mind making the drive down to help out, we can work it out as far as gas costs.

Saw your post on CL selling the 450. Are you still looking for a 500 motor? I'm the one Adidasguy was referring to who needed a straight frame. Anyways, There's a parts bike that just showed up today on CL

Yeah... I think I'm just going to sell my GS450 and get a GS500. Anyone disagree?

But then again, you need that frame and I could probably fix that engine...
