Hi, I'm a new Gs500e owner. A friend gave me his '93 but he cannot find the keys for it. I called a dealer and they basically told me they couldn't help me and I should call a locksmith. So I got the Haynes repair manual and planned on pulling the ignition switch. It is supposed to have two torx bolts but they are the funniest looking torx bolts I've ever seen. They look more like tiny stripped hex screws. A locksmith told me there should be a code stamped into the bottom of the ignition but I could not find that either.
Any suggestions on where I can find this code or what I can do to get the ignition switch out? I hope I don't have to drill the bolts out...
Thanks in advance!
Those are security torx bolts. When they reach the proper torque spec, the head twists off. They don't get torqued that tight. You can use a chisel to loosen them up. Easiest way , though, is to remove the upper clamp that the switch is mounted in and take the whole thing to a locksmith. They can make a key by 'wiggling' the lock. Cost me $20 each on 2 bikes a couple of months ago.

Thanks for the advice... What do you mean exactly by the upper clamp?
Same thing happened to me a locksmith can come out and cut a key by hand w/o the number but it cost me 110 for two keys :x but on the bright side I keep track of those keys really well now good luck
The upper clamp is the piece that clamps around the top of the forks. It's what your handlebars, gauges, and ignition switch are mounted to.
I lost my only key once. Loaded up bike in truck and took it to a locksmith. He made me a key for $35. :thumb:
If your friend didn't give you a little keychain looking thing with a four digget number on it, check the original owners manual (if you have it) and hope that the number is in there. The number is the key number that a dealer can relate to and get you a key. By the way if you will do this don't get a second key at the dealer, for copies go to a local hardware store and try to find suz18 blank those work preaty nice or get a suz12 mold which I personaly have.

i will never understand some people and how they treat motorcycles. For instance, the kind who buys a bike and then it sits in the garage for years untouched. Or the sort who loose things like the tool kit or keys. How do you loose sometihng like that? You dont loose your spare tire for your car!(i'd hope) Or the people that sell bikes for a "friend" and you ask them if it runs and you get "uhh, well it ran a few years ago. Prob just needs a new battery." Then why dont you put one in dumbass.
Whoops that turned into a rant. I guess you get common stupidity w/ motorcycles just like anything else.

Actually my friend is married with two kids, one a year old. He just moved into a new house and doesn't have time for his bike anymore. When he found out I just got my license he offered the bike to me. He told me it needed some work and cound't remember the last time he rode it. Maybe someone with more experience with motorcycles would have turned down a free bike with no key but I guess it's just common stupidity on my part.
I wish my friends would give me motorcycles. I just get the occasional beer.
Ehh, it works.
