Title: Engine Weight?
Post by: Rollin668 on November 14, 2003, 12:20:06 PM
Anyone know how much the GS engine weighs?
Approximate if fine... or better yet - can it be carried by one NORMAL person or do I need an accomplice?

Thinking about removing the engine, dragging it upstairs to my apartment and fixing the engine in my living room - wife is gonna LOVE me!!!  Seems like either everyone wants too much money for an engine or I can't find one.

Also, I'm wondering what I might be in for when I start taking this thing apart to replace/fix the counter balancer bearings - remember that my counter balancer has a lot of freeplay inside the engine now and there's a nice small groove cut into the side cover.

The whole engine weighs about 125 lbs. and is a pretty tough go by yourself. If you take the head and cylinders off it will be sort of manageable.

I suspect your cases will be toast - the bearing shell tends to spin in the cases when it sticks to the ahft, and screws up the tightly toleranced machined surface where the shell bearing sits.

Yeah, they're tough to move around solo. It's not so much the weight as the awkwardness of it. I strapped mine to a hand truck to maneuver it around - you might try that strategy to at least tackle the stairs.
