Title: Ran out of oil...
Post by: bombjack on June 06, 2011, 10:52:28 AM
The old GS stalled today after a few hours of riding. I noticed a drop of oil hanging under the engine, so I checked the oil level. It was below the 'low' mark
I have added the right amount of oil now, and the engine start up, but is running a little rough. If I rev the engine fast, it stalls.

Is the engine toast? Or just the top end?

I hope someone can help me out?
Thanks in advance!

No oil usually trashes the rod, crankshaft, and balancer shaft bearings, not to mention the cam journals, pistons, and cylinders.

It's toast. Replace it. Engine will eventually size, and if you're lucky it'll happen on a straight-away. If you're unlucky, it'll happen at Turn 15 at T-Hill, and your arm will be pulled out of your socket when your body hits the curbing.

And, I suspect that the vibration is coming from the bottom end, not the top.

How much oil did you add back in after it (seized?) stalled?

A siezed engine is one that won't turn, even if you put a wrench on it. It stalled.

The engine just stopped like it was running out of gas (plenty of gas in the tank though). No weird noises or anything. No smoke or burnt smell either.
I added about 250 ml (0.066 gallons) of oil and now the oil level is right between the 'low' and 'max' marks.

I'm hoping it's another issue (carbs, bad gas), but the very low oil level got me worried.

250ml below the low mark isn't too bad. Running rough and dieing as you rev the engine up does worry me though. Might be worth sending a sample in for UOA - that could tell you if there's a lot of bearing material in the oil.

Engine is running smooth again  :woohoo:
A carb cleaning was apparantly what it needed.
I still really don't know what happend. Was the low oil level the cause at all? The engine did start after I added more oil.

You are very luck, usually not enough oil=blow engine and that's it.
