I recently went to a powder coating shop to ask about having my frame coated. That fell threw since its now full on riding season and I just want to ride but one thing he had mentioned was that before i bring the frame in I should clean it with wheel cleaner and he specifically mentioned the stuff that u ARE NOT supposed to use on painted wheels. Has anyone ever tried this to clean the frame, not prepping for PC, without damaging it. He said it really cuts through the grease so i thought i might give it a try. THANKS!
No touch tire spray, the type that foams. I use that stuff all over my engine bay for my civic and its super clean.

lol... isn't that stuff just a wax that makes your tires shiny? That's absolutely not what he wants.
He wants a solvent, supposedly the stuff in heavy duty wheel cleaner. You want to be sure you've removed all of the grease, dirt, and oil. I would think any type of degreaser would work, but I've never had anything powder coated so I'm not sure.
Are you supposed to sand blast it to powder coat it?
How else are going to get rid of absolutely all the paint and rust spots?

Yes its got to be stripped.
I usually just use WD-40 or Engine Degreaser.
Yea it was going to be blasted but for some reason he wanted it precleaned. Just didnt know if someone had tried it.
The sand blast cabinet they have may be some dinky cardboard box. My guy uses one the size of a 48ft tractor trailer. I've seen him fit a 3 story spital staircase in it and blast it and then coat it, came out phenomenal, apparently they hand painted detail like running leaves and other fruity bs on it before carting it to a local foo foo restaurant. Yea it became pretty ghey by the time it was done but the thing started out pretty cool.

Unless he prebakes the parts before coating,they will have to be spotless and free of grease and oil before media blasting.Media blasting will drive the grease deep into the poors of the steel,and then cook off during the oven cure.I always prebake parts after media blasting and before powder coating.
