Title: Reuse oil?
Post by: GSProdigy on June 10, 2011, 11:45:38 AM
So I just changed my oil. Then I had the bright idea a week later to replace my right side engine cover.

Do I need to by completely new oil or can I drain the oil with only 200 miles on it and reuse it?

Thanks

I'd use a clean container and then a filter in my funnel & reuse it.  Just my .02

yeah why not, it's only seen a few hundred miles.

what kind of filter could you use with it though?

Ideally you'd use a GS oil filter, just pour it through the hole in the center.

If it's a new filter it should be fine, just make sure you clean it after using it to filter the reused oil before you put it back in the bike.

Thoroughly clean around the drain plug, thoroughly clean the oil pan, and ideally put it in a sealed container between the drain and the re-use. IMO, filtering the oil shouldn't be necessary, so long as you take precautions. All oil in the engine is screened and filtered before running through the engine passages anyway.

Yep.Just make sure everything is kept clean and use a coffee filter in the funnel when you refill. It make take longer, but it'll save you on buying oil.
