Title: Head gasket
Post by: ATLRIDER on June 19, 2011, 03:08:04 PM
Hey guys,

I just replaced a leaking engine base gasket and was wondering if I would need to retorque the head bolts after say 600 miles or so.  Any suggestions.

Thanks!

+1

Worst case scenario they've come a bit loose and you need to tighten them down anyway, and best case they're still torqued to spec.

most heads are torque to spec then X degrees is the GS500 head not like that? if its strait torque then sure go for it... if its to Y torque and then X degrees then dont mess with it... also... most engine rebuilders recommend new head bolts with each rebuild because of stretching...

Ok, thanks.  Planning on re-checking valve clearance after running a bit, then the head bolts.

But be a bit careful, new bolts stretch more than old, and hence can work with less torque. Also if you've loctited them, its going to have to be broken and re torqued with new loctite.
Cool.
