Hey all,
I'm kickin' around the idea of replacing my mirrors on my '97 with something a little more unique, ar at least nicer looking (SV650's?)
anyway, I assume the mirrors are the standard 10mm screw-in style, corrrect? Any other requirements I should consider before buying (for example, stem length so that I don't end up lookin' at myself in the mirrors instead of what's behing me)?
thanks in advance.
peace

Yes.
Also consider bar end mirrors like napoleons or bicycle mirrors. Check my site photos for some options.
I have 1 lockhart bar end mirror on the left, and I think that it really makes my bike look better. It also makes it easier to see whats behind you, if you have wide shoulders like myself.
I got some black plastic Superbike mirrors free with my bike. They look identical to the original chrome mirrors, only they have shorter stalks. They suck! They look nice, but are virtually useless as far as mirrors go. I guess they might work ok if you're under 5'6", but otherwise stay away from them.
I put SV650 "loli-pop" mirrors on 'Lita's GS. I prefer them to the rectangular ones. They go better with the round headlight and are about as effective.
I installed these from motografix www.moto-graphics.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=68 . I dont know if that link will work, should hopefully. Had to take the stems of an old pair of GS ones and then just retap the end. Not too difficult to do and they certainly dont work as good as others but they go with the stunt look of my bike now.
if you're on the tall side, you might want to go for mirrors with longer stems or the bar end ones. As for me, I have a cool pair of chrome teardrop mirrors from Emgo(with wide-angle mirrors) but even if i have the adjusted correctly, sometimes i have to dip a little for the mirror sightlines to clear my shoulders :( Maybe it'll be better with new handlebars.
After my second bycicle mirror vibrated away on the highway.
I rode 5500 miles without any mirrors at all. :o without incident.
I was curious if I could. That and the stockers only showed mostly shoulder  and I am 5'7 and they look reeeeeaaaaly stupid with my black drag bars. Once I got used to not looking for my mirrors I was fine riding at any speed.
The problem was sitting at lights. I was constantly having to turn around to look behind me looking for cages coming from behind. I looked like a nevous criminal :guns: .
Recently, I installed a blind spot mirror I got from Pep Boys for a $1.66 after seeing them on Chimvee's bike. He was kind enough to make me one of his simple but elegant bar end mirror brackets for it.
Looks cool :thumb: It gives a wide veiw and will keep me from getting a ticket. It is a little blury but for under $2, I am impressed.
I have used the standard mirrors, bar end napolean like mirrors and now billet mirrors. I like the small ones the best. They are the bicycle mirrors.
I would highly recommend swapping in SV650 mirrors. They look *much* better than stock on the bike (I almost can't over-state this enough). Why Suzuki didn't put these on the bike originally I'll never know, it's like they want the GS to look like crap. :dunno:
Yes, they'll screw right in out of the box. They vibrate much less than stock. And, best of all, you can get them fairly cheap (~$30 a pair) assuming you go the ebay route. I wouldn't recommend getting them new from a Suzuki dealer, as they'll ream you for about $40 EACH.
I used some bicycle mirrors (rode gear) and made a couple of bar-end brackets. I will post a picture when I get home. It was a challenge to get the bend angles just right but easily done with a vice and some vice grips.
Looks way cooler than stock mirrors.

Nice looking bike. :thumb:
thanks everybody.
I called the dealer just to get a reference price on SV650 mirrors.... 70 bucks a set!! :bs: Looks like I'm gonna be watching ebay for a while. Maybe end up doing something creative like 500rider did. I'll be sure to give an update when I get new mirrors on.
peace
500rider-if you painted that bracket you made black you'd have exactly what I have! Looks great.
