Title: Engine Swap 97 into a 2005 frame
Post by: breaker950 on June 24, 2011, 09:10:15 PM
So I have researched this and found that there are a few issues. Ill be going naked of course, but I am more concerned with the electrical right now. If there is anything I should know or that may be helpful please chime in. For the ignition timer, I basically unbolt and exchange, correct? As for the hole for the mech tach I just need to plug it and I can keep the gauges as is right? I heard removing the left side cover will make it easier to get into the frame. Does anything else NEED to be swapped?

Also I will be tearing the other motor apart and hopefully rebuilding it if there is a possibility of that.

Thanks in advance, you gstwinners are so helpful!

I know that not everyone is swapping the engine out, but is there no one that can throw out some advise, or did I just cover the details well enough?

use the electrics from your 05 on the 97 engine

*shrug* don't know.

I do know that a 2006 carb has an electrical doo-hickie on it, and vacuum ports going to the slide diaphragm... but a 2001 gs does not have that stuff.
(seems to work okay without that stuff hooked up to anything) (edit: supposedly the older carbs are 'better' anyway)

Dunno about an 05' though.

If you are just using your bike, and a donor motor.... can't you just swap out what ever is not the same (reuse your old parts for everything but the actual motor)?

Yeah I guess I can just swap and hope for the best. I was hoping someone knew if it was okay to do that. Also you bring up a good point. I would just use the carbs from my 05 rather than the carbs from the 97. Guess that means there may be carbs for sale soon.

Well we will see how far I get on my locked up motor and then maybe Ill have 2 bikes again.
