Title: tire combo question
Post by: homeyjosey on June 28, 2011, 06:53:00 AM
Hi everyone....my rear tire is done for and it was a bt016 150/60 but my front is still pretty good and is a 120/70...these tires came with the bike when i bought it.

My question is, s it ok to go with a 130/70 rear withe the 120/70 front?

No.  The BT016 are radial supersport tires and any 130/70 I can think of would be a bias tire.  A radial front and a bias rear is a bad mix although a bias front with a radial rear can be OK.  I wouldn't do it and I've used a lot of tire mixes on my GSs.  Don't like the idea of the 120/70 and 130/70 size mix either although it might be OK if of they are same construction.

I agree 100%.

How about first to get 140/70R17 Dunlop Sportmax D208SM. It's a radial rear tire.
Then when it's time to replace the frot tire, get some stock size bias-ply tire.
Then you can replace your rear tire with stock size...  :)

Those D208SM tires are kinda pricey here but if you want to stick with radials front and rear a Shinko Podium 006 tire in the 140/60 or 150/60 size can be found for $80-90.  Can probably get a good pair of stock size bias tires for not much more than the D208SM.

I Have the shinko podium front in 120/60-17 and it rocks!

Actually, for the 2 first weeks I thought something was wrong because it wouldnt handle right, but then I realized that its actually gripping, and not sliding!

I run Shinko 005 Advanced 120-60-17 front and 160-60-17 rear.I have no error in my speedo and it's GPS verified.

I should note that I am running a first generation Bandit 600 4.5 inch rear wheel with that 160 rear tire.
